Match Trivia

Through the kindness of 3rd Lanark the Rangers and the Vale of Leven played their return match on Cathkin Park. The previous match of the teams resulted in a win for the ‘light blues’. In the interest was taken in the contest, which was the only important one in the city, and consequently attracted a large number of spectators there being about 3000 present, the weather overhead was of the delightful and this probably was no small factor in attracting the large crowd which witnessed the game. The ground however was in a somewhat soft condition, which materially interfered with the excellence of the play. Owing to accidence to the Rangers backs Oswald of Third Lanark and Quinton Neil (of the Queen’s Park) played for the Kinning Park men. About 4.14 the Rangers kicked off, and for a time the play was of a give-an-take nature. With the exception of an occasional run by the Rangers the Vale did the most of the passing. At length, however the Rangers wakened up a bit and a determined attack on their part resulted in Wilson fisting out. Lindsay made a great effort to score, but in shooting the ball rebounded off Whitelaw. Another excellent shot was sent in, and ultimately the ball went behind. The strangers, however soon assumed the aggressive, and a speedy run along the right resulted in a very smart shot being sent in Chalmers fisted out and saved his charge in grand style. So far the game was very interesting. Again and again the Rangers custodian was called upon, and on each occasion he kept his goal intact, fully making up for his want of form against the Villa. As time wore on the game became more interfering, runs and counter runs being the order of the day. Through the efforts of Fraser on the right, the ball was finally centred to Lindsay who was rather late in coming up and lost the opportunity. Towards the close of the first half the Vale had the attack, and several times narrowly escaped scoring. The cons pious point of the Rangers play was really brilliant runs of Fraser (who had several times ‘hard lines’ in not registering points for himself and the exceedingly hard work of Lindsay in the centre). The Vale to a man played with characteristic determination but their shooting was erratic. One of their halfbacks in particular sent the ball widely over the crossbar. Some minutes from the call of time the persistent efforts of the Vale were awarded with success one of the wing players sending the ball through amidst loud cheers. Following this the Rangers were soon at the other end, and forced their opponents to concede a corner. Fraser took the kick and an exciting scrimmage ensured, but the football was cleared. Halftime was called with the score Vale of Leven one goal; Rangers 0 goals. The second half had no sooner started than the Vale forwards rushed the ball up and scored their second point. The Rangers however did give the strangers a hard time of it as they were soon on the offensive, but could not score. The Vale front rank combined spendiltily, and made many fine runs into to their opponents territory, causing Chalmers great trouble The ball however could not be got through. About 15 minutes from the close the Rangers from a combined run scored their first point amided great cheering. Peacock doing the needful. The vale retained but all their efforts were rendered futile. Towards the close of the game the Rangers had the best of it and hovered round their opponents goal, but without effect. Immediately before the whistle blew the Vale broke away, and had a capital chance, but the ball was sent over the crossbar. Result Vale of Leven 2 goals Rangers 1 goal.
