Match Trivia
On Saturday last, the Glasgow Rangers visited Grangemouth, and after a hard game, victory rested with the Western players by 4 goals to 1. The ground was in a very soft condition, and there would be about 300 spectators present. The Rangers played ten men throughout. Grangemouth had to kick off the ball with the sun in their faces, and a shot by one of them was all but taking effect – Muir saving by conceding a corner, After Nicol had missed the ball. Thereafter the Rangers had the play mostly at Grangemouth end for five minutes. They were beaten back, however and a scrimmage took place at Rangers goal, where one of the Grangemouth players fouled the ball. From the free kick, Gow had a good run, and sent in a shot, which Ballantyne struck out. At the second attempt, Gow sent the leather wide. Some good long passing by Grangemouth brought the ball to Rangers goal. McMurchie sent in a long shot, which struck the crossbar, and rebounded into play over the heads of several of the Grangemouth players who were rushing in on Muir. McIntyre cleared, and the ball was rushed to the other end, where for five minutes a severe pressure was kept up on the home goal – Gow on the left, being specially prominent in the attack. The defence of Grangemouth was good. The Rangers had again to retire, and Muir had to fist out a long shot. The ball being returned by a Grangemouth back, Cox cleverly slipped the ball out from the foot of Gow, the Rangers back, and sent in a shot to Muir, which the custodian fisted out. Again the ball was returned, and Gow having fallen, he had just time to get on to his feet, and kick the ball over the bar – thus giving a corner – before the Grangemouth forwards were on him. A scrimmage resulted from the corner kick, but the goal was cleared, and the ball carried to the home goal, where the leather was sent wide. Twice again the Rangers spoiled their chance of scoring by seeding the ball wide, and then an excellent attempt was made by Peacock from near the corner to score, the ball running along the crossbar. With the exception of a short scrimmage at the Rangers goal and a long shot by McMurchie, the rest of the play up to halftime was in favour of the Rangers who, however could not manage to score. Halftime found the ball in the vicinity of the Grangemouth goal. After a short rest, Chalmers started the second half and his team then ran down, and the ball being centred from the left, it was headed past the post. Grangemouth were indulging in long passing, and from one of these runs, Muir had to save a long shot. Gow was instrumental in bring the ball to the Grangemouth goal, where a corner was obtained. Laurie afterwards with a clear goal, sent the ball over the bar. Play for the next few minutes was more even, the Rangers, however having the best of the play at goal. After the Rangers had had another unfruitful corner, their goal had a narrow escape from a shot by Cox. After a throw-in, the ball was sent behind the Rangers goal. Gow the Rangers back then had several good runs round the Grangemouth men, and one or two shots grazed the posts. Grangemouth again ran up to Muir’s charge, and Robertson sent in a shot, which was beautifully lifted from under the bar by Gow. Grangemouth then had an unproductive corner off Nicol, and when the ball was being taken down the field it burst. After another ball had been procured, the Rangers had the best of the play, and at last Chalmers carried all before him, and scored No.1 for the Rangers. Two minutes after Dickson sent a long shot into the Rangers goal. Gow did not get the leather properly away, and Gardiner, by a good shot equalised the score. The Rangers then pressed the home team, one especially good shot by McQueen being well saved by Ballantyne. Gow at last managed to add a second point for the strangers, after they had had several corners. It appeared as if Grangemouth were again to equalise, as Dickson had a clear goal immediately after, but he sent the ball over the bar. The Rangers then had three corners in succession, and Chalmers afterwards scored a third goal. Shortly after this a fourth goal was scored by McQueen sending in a high shot, which went off Anderson head through the goal, and the game thus ended – Rangers 4 goals, Grangemouth 1 goal.
