Match Trivia
The Rangers journeyed to Uddingston last night to play the local team. The ground of the Uddingston at Meadowbank had lately been levelled for the most part by the members themselves and although, there is stillroom for improvement in this line, the ground now presents quite a different appearance and increase in no small degree the facilities for pursuing the game. The Rangers played their usual cup-tie team, and Uddingston had gathered together their very strongest eleven including Sommerville, the noted Queen’s Park man, who at one time played in the ranks of the Rangers. There was a large a turnout of spectators as the match is considered the most important that has yet taken place in the locality. The weather was favourable and the ground, notwithstanding the recent rain, was dry and hard. Winning the toss the Uddingston elected to play with the wind at their backs, and McKenzie set the ball going for the Rangers. After being taken up to the Rangers goal, the ball was sent back to the Uddingston, and shot through by McKenzie. The play then became pretty general till Lawrie successded in scoring the second point for the Rangers. On the ball being set going again it was taken up to the Rangers goal, and sent through in magnificent style by Sommerville. A few minutes before halftime McKenzie very cleverly headed the ball through the Uddingston goal, the game then standing 3 goals to 1. After a few minutes interval the ball was got going, but no exciting play took place in the second half till Campbell sent the ball through the Uddingston goal. Just before the whistle blew McLean the Uddingston goalkeeper saved his goal very cleverly indeed, although he got rather a bad charge in so doing. The Game thus ended in favour of the town team by 4 goals to 1. The play of the Rangers was splendid, while that of the local team, particular they’re passing, was much above they’re usual. The turnout of spectators was unusually large, and will help the local club financially this fulfilling the object for which the match was arranged.
