Match Trivia

This match came off at Hampden Park in presence of a large gathering of spectators, and despite the fact that an extra half hour was played again ended in a draw only one goal being scored by each side all the time the game lasted. The number of drawn matches in the Charity Cup ties this season has been a great blessing to the various charitable institutions about to be augmented in funds, as the drawings of Saturday’s contest amounted to the handsome sums of fully £250, and this added to the amount already put at the disposal of the committee, brings up the funds to between £1100 and £1200, with the two matches still to come off. The Rangers in the present game wanted the service of Gow and Hotson, who played the first game a week ago, their places filled by Lawrie and Muir. The strangers however turned out precisely the same eleven as on the first occasion, and the game all through was well contested. The country team lost the toss for choice of ends, and kicked off from midfield. They had soon the ball down into the Rangers territory where a free kick was granted close to the Glasgow teams goal, but nothing came of it. Shortly after Renton conceded a corner-flag kick, and the ball being well laced McKenzie had little difficulty in scoring a goal by heading it through. The Renton soon after the next kick-off, got down on their opponents goals, but Chalmers averted the danger by fisting the ball out in front of the goal. The Renton still pressed upon the Rangers goal, which Chalmers again defended, with great skill, but finally during a scrimmage in front Campbell succeeded in getting through, and kicking a goal. In the second half despite the efforts of both teams, no scoring took place although both goals had several narrow escape. Once the Renton goal was in danger owing to some bungling between the backs and goalkeeper, McKenzie and Fraser, for the Rangers made capital runs but owing to some careless passing nothing came of them. At one time the Rangers goal was in great danger, and this was only averted by Chalmers heading out the ball to McKenzie, who after a splendid run, passed to Fraser. The latter however kicked over the Renton lines. The Rangers then besieged their opponent’s goal, and gave the strangers considerable trouble, but Lindsay prevented mischief. At the close of the game Barbour kicked a goal for the Renton. The Rangers protested that when the goal was scored it was 40 seconds over statutory time. The referee took this view after some discussion, and the game was continued for another half-hour. When time was called however there was no more scoring, and the contest resulted in a draw – one goal each.
