Match Trivia

Played at Easter Road Edinburgh in presence of a large gathering of spectators. The Rangers started the game, and for a time play was confined to midfield. Good combined play by the visitor’s forwards gave Tobin some anxiety, but Fagan intercepted and cleared his lines. The ball was sent to midfield, and taking up the running, the home front rank made an attack on the bottom goal. A foul against Groves enabled the Glasgow men to clear their charge. Another foul against the Hibs a few yards from their citadel looked dangerous. The ball was well placed, but Lawrie lost an easy chance by rash shooting. The home forwards were next prominent by good passing. Chalmers, however was on the alert, and saved grandly. McCartney relieved, and Fraser got possession, and after dodging McLaren be sent in a beauty which Tobin with difficultly saved. The ground men retaliated and Chalmers successfully negotiated shots from Smith and Cox. A portion of open play followed. Both goals were repeatedly attacked but the strong defence of the respective custodian frustrated all efforts of the opposing forwards. Towards the close of the first period the ‘light blues’ playing with grand dash, forced the pass, but they were unlucky in front of goal, and at halftime there was no scoring. After smashing play the game was for some time contained to the visitors territory till a breakaway by the right wing changed the scene of operation to the other end, where Tobin and Lundy were kept busy for a time. The latter ultimately cleared, but Fraser got possession, and a long shot from the foot of that player beat Tobin. The Edinburgh team replied, and by good passing gave Chalmers great anxiety. The Rangers custodian conceded a corner, and from a splendid centre McGinn headed the ball through, open play followed. Fraser distinguished himself by dashing play on the right, and he again gave his team a lending point from a grand centre by Johnston. A few minutes later McLaren sent in a beauty from midfield to Chalmers, who fisted out, but Groves was lying handy, and by a smart shot lowered the visitor’s colours, thus equalising matters. Time was called without any change in the score, the game resulting in a draw – two goals each.
