Match Trivia

Yesterday afternoon an interesting contest took place at Bramall Lane Ground between the above teams, in the presence of a very large attendance of spectators, the weather being extremely fine. The Glasgow party contended against Nottingham on Saturday, and easily defeated them. They are a fine looking body of men, and the Wednesday club though playing an excellent game were apparently over-matched, their opponents not only dribbling and crossing well, but possessing great speed. The principal features of the play were the grand kicking of Vallance, for Glasgow and the first rate goalkeeping of F Stacey for Wednesday. The latter to our thinking is about the best custodian in Sheffield. Glasgow won the toss and WH Stacey (Wednesday captain) kicked off at three o’clock. After a few minutes lay the ball was worked down to the Wednesday goal, where successive shots were aimed at it by Marshall and Vallance, one going over or close by the bar, and the other being stopped by the Sheffield custodian F Stacey. For some time the game was confined to the Wednesday half, a fine kick of McIntyre being particularly noticeable, Marshall had another shy which just cleared the bar. Good play was then exhibited by Paterson, Gregory and JC Clegg, but McIntyre had another shot all along the ground. Then Wednesday made a sortie and JC Clegg had a throw-in close up but it proved ineffective, the leather being promptly removed to the opposite end. Watson had a shot, which just flew above the bar, JC Clegg had another throw-in close up, and Gregory had an opportunity, but he failed to utilise it. Shortly after JC Clegg again threw in nearly from the corner, but again the ball was got away. Moses McNeil now had a shy but again F Stacey cleverly saved his charge. A fine long run by Gregory, JC Clegg and Bishop was the next feature the last named being collared by the arms by a Scotch player when near the goal, and the umpires gave it in foul. JC Clegg had the free kick, and the leather was all but landed through. Again the ball was removed and Glasgow had another corner kick but the Wednesday team succeeded in getting it way in the very nick of time. Effective kicking by Buttery and Bingley was followed by a capital struggle between little Bishop and a big Scotchman, the latter getting slightly the worst of it. The Glasgow party now made a determine raid upon the citadel of their opponents and in a scrimmage just in front of goal the leather was landed through the sticks. Vallance play back all this time had been the theme of general admiration his kicking being very strong and well aimed. F Stacey again saved his charge in rare style, amid hearty applause, where upon half time was called. On the sphere being again started, after a run by Gregory Wednesday had a corner kick, and immediately after Bishop executed a fine shot, which it took the Scotch custodian all his time to stop. Gregory then scored a pretty goal, but the ball having previously been out it was disallowed. The Glasgow men immediately invaded the Wednesday territory and rushing the ball up it was forced through. On an objection by WH Stacey however, the score was disallowed but the Scotchmen having a corner kick, Hill cleverly headed it through the posts, two goals to none. For sometime after this most of the play was in Glasgow quarters, and a grand return of T Buttery was especially observable. Clever efforts by Paterson succeeded after which a couple of corner kicks fell to Glasgow, and F Stacey again dextrously saved his post when it looked certain to be reduced. The locality of the game was then removed to Glasgow quarters and Gregory nearly scored from a nice cross by Paterson. The same player with the assistance of F Butler all but repeated the dose immediately after. A fine shy by Bingley was well saved by the Scotch keeper. Ultimately the Wednesday not to be denied forced the ball close up to their antagonist’s goal and the ball being taken charge of by Paterson it was cleverly steered between the posts amid general cheering. It was now close upon time, and for the remainder of the game Wednesday held a slight lead, though all round there can be no doubt they were overmatched. When the umpires called time Glasgow had won an excellent contest by two goals to one
