Match Trivia

On Saturday afternoon lasts these two famous clubs met on the Trent Ground Nottingham, to play a friendly match at football. The weather was fine though dull and the ground in fair condition. Notwithstanding the circumstance that a more than usually high charge was made by the committee of the home club for admission to the ground, the game was witnessed by nearly 2000 people, and the liveliest interest was manifested in the proceeding. The Scotch club has gained considerable notoriety in the football world. A statement which the following figures fully supports - in season 1876-77 the Rangers played in matches, made 131 goals – goals lost 21; in 1877-78 they have played 19 matches goals made 91; goals lost 11, whilst the proceeds of their three Cup tie matches with the Vale of Leven amounted to £478. A Covered conveyance drawn by four horses was provided to bring the vistors to the ground, and a start was made at five minutes past three o’clock. Nottingham won the toss, and Vallance kicked off for the Rangers against a slight wind. At the outset the Glasgow team asserted their superior strength, and their perfect organisation at once attracted attention. At a very early period of the game the ball was sent over the Nottingham goal line, and a few minutes afterwards Glasgow made the first score, the ball bounding off the body of a Forester through the post – this after twenty minutes play. The Nottingham men did their best to make things even and the second goal, the outcome of an exciting scrimmage in front of the post came to the credit of the home team. Some neat pieces of dribbling followed this shown chiefly by the visitors, and within a quarter of an hour after the last score, McNeil whose play throughout was very fine scored the second goal for his side, the ball taking the Nottingham goalkeeper (Sands) off his legs in its passage. The next goal, which happen before the change on ends, was kicked by Golland for the Foresters the result of skilful “working” by Widdowson and others, and at the call of halftime four goals had been registered two to each side. With the charge of position the Glasgow players had what little wind there was in their favour, and their superiority was even more marked than in the first half of the game. The ball was continually seen in the Nottingham territory and more than one shot was made at goal by the Glasgow forwards, who did their work well. At about a quarter after four o’clock McNeil was successful in placing a third goal to the credit of his club. The play now became fast and furious. Repeated attacks were made upon the Nottingham stronghold by the Glasgow forwards, and the Forest goalkeeper and his supporters had a hot time of it. Just before the hour fixed for a cessation of hostilities the Rangers made a fourth goal, the result of a fine kick by Marshall, and were thus victorious by four goals to two. The Glasgow players were heartily cheered on leaving the ground
