Match Trivia
Dunfermline Charity Cup tie. In aid of the funds of the Dunfermline Charity Association a match between the Rangers (Glasgow) and Scottish Corinthians was played at Lady’s-Mill Park on Saturday. There was a fir turn-out of spectators, but nothing like the number that should have been at a match between such teams, and certainly not what ought to have been at a charity match. The Committee were very unfortunate with the Corinthians team – only one player (McAra) turning up out of the eight that should have done. This it is needless to say, was very disappointing to the public. Substitutes, and certainly not very efficient ones, had therefore to be picked off the field. Owing to the late arrival of some of the Rangers the match was delayed for over half-an-hour. A very high wind – almost a gale – was blowing during the whole of the match, and thus made good play impossible. The Rangers kicked off, and the ball was carried down on the home goal by the strong wind, but McAra returned with a powerful kick, Peacock and McLellan dribbled well down, and Peacock shit in, but Harrower was all there, and kicked out. The Rangers severely pressed the home team, but Lawson cleared with a strong kick. Hamilton tried had to get away, but was well checked by Hotson, and the ball was returned. J Gow shot in, and beat Harrower for the first time. The Rangers continued to press, but the defence of Lawson and McAra was grand. Peacock however, found an opening and scored No. 2 with a hard shot – Harrower missing the ball. The Rangers did all the pressing in this half, and scored other four goals – Gow, Aird, Peacock and McKenzie being responsible for them. The first half finished with the score standing – Rangers 6 goals; Corinthians nil. O change of ends Corinthians assumed the aggressive – Nicol saving hard shots from Hamilton, Hughes and Johnston almost in succession. The Rangers occasionally got away, but were always repulsed by McAra. Corinthians continued to press, and Hendry was forced to give a corner, which Hamilton placed beautifully – dropping the ball right in front of goal. The result was that Pringle sent the ball through between the uprights. The Corinthians still continued to press. D Gow at one time got on the ball, and ran it down the whole length of the field. His parting shot however came to nothing. The Rangers again pressed, but could not beat Harrower. The game thus ended in a win for the Rangers by 6 goals to 2. For the Rangers, D Gow is a strong kick, and showed good defence, as also Hendry. Peacock is a good shot. Aird did well. The same can be said of Gow. On the Corinthians side, Hamilton is a tricky dribbler. Pringle played well, but was far too selfish, and seldom if ever passed to Hamilton to give him a chance. Lawson and McAra played splendidly – the latter doing yeoman service for his team. Hughes played fairly well, and has the makings of a good player in him
