Match Trivia

This match was played at Ibrox Park in presence of about 5000 spectators and ended in favour of the Rangers by three goals to one. The weather was fine, but rather cold, a strong wind blowing from the southwest throughout the game. The Aston Villa kicked off, and for some time kept the ball in their opponent’s territory, but Gow of the Rangers, broke away and registered the first point for that club. The visitors protested against this point being allowed on account of offside, but without success. The Rangers then pressed, and several times had fine shots at Warner’s charge, all of which were unsuccessful. Hunter had a splendid run up the field for the Villa, but McIntyre getting the ball sent it back to the visitors end of the field, where the ground team secured a corner, and out of a scrimmage Gow again scored for the Rangers. The strangers then pressed and a goal was scored by them from Hunter’s feet. The strangers now carried the ball up the field, bit it was sharply returned. Allan of the Aston Villa had a fine shot, which was stopped with difficulty by Nicol. The visitors then pressed for some time, but none of their shots took effect. Just a little while before halftime Gow notched a third point for the home team. At halftime the game stood – Rangers 3 goals; Aston Villa 1 goal. On the game being resumed the Rangers returned the pressure and had a corner, which however resulted in nothing. Gow had some fine runs up centre but failed to add to the Rangers score. The Aston Villa now got a free kick, but the ball struck the bar and rebounded into play. The visitors continued to press and gave the Rangers some trouble but latterly the ball was sent over the goal line. The strangers gained another corner flag kick, which came to nothing. No further scoring took place up till the call of time, and the game ended as above
