Match Trivia
This important tie, which has created much interest in football circles, came off at Renton in presence of 4000 spectators. The ground is not suited for a passing game at any time, and on Saturday especially in the second half; it formed for the most part an enclosure of mud. Both team were at their strongest. The Rangers team was similar to that of the previous Saturday. Renton had a new man (Archibald McIntyre) in the centre. The changed worked well. The Rangers kicked off but Renton assumed the aggressive at once and although both goals were attacked Renton had rather the best of it. Nine minutes from the start they scored their first goal. A second one was cleverly taken five minutes later - much to the chagrin of their opponents. They however played up pluckily and stubbornly contested every yard of ground and when the game was thirty minutes gone they were rewarded with a goal. Several good chances were subsequently presented to them of attacking the home goal. Of these they took full advantage, out the back play of Renton was exceedingly good. Half a minute from the call of halftime the strangers equalised the game. Both teams being now on a par the second half began with great dash and determination and in two minutes the Rangers had scored a third goal. In five minutes however the Rentonians had again got on equal terms with their opponents. After the game was again resumed the home team broke at once away and scored a fourth goal in less than a minute. Their fifth and last goal was taken when the game was 18 minutes old. From this time to the finish the Rangers forwards showed evident tokens of distress. The game ended as above in favour of the Renton by five goals to three.
