Match Trivia
This was a very successful exhibition match, between 200 and 300 paying for admission at the gate. The Dumbartonshire Club was somewhat easily disposed of by the Rangers, who had little difficulty in obtaining goals when they got the ball past their opponent’s backs as the Vale goalkeeper saved his team very inefficiently. Nearly all the hard work of the Dumbartonshire Eleven was done by the four “old hands” JJ Baird, McDougall, Paton Jamieson – the two former playing, brilliantly all through the game. The centre forwards were weak when compared with the dashing play of last year’s men, and with the exception of Jamieson who never played better. None of the of the new backs showed any great ability though at times McPherson and E Jones did some clever things. All the Rangers backs played very well Vallance being never off the ball, and the forwards wrought splendidly from start to finish. In speed the Rangers forwards completely outran their opponents, M McNeil and P Campbell in particular showing some very fast dribbling. The new rule passed last year with reference to playing the ball as soon as sent in from touch had the effect of making the game very fast, as no time was lost in disputing the throw-in. The game ended in favour of the Rangers by five goals to nothing; the first was taken at the start, the others in the second half
