Match Trivia
The ground of West of Scotland at Partick was the place chosen for this final cup tie, and although the day was rather unfavourable, there were 6,000 spectators inside the ground, while fully as many were outside the enclosure. The Rangers having won the toss, decided to defend the northern goal, with the fall of the ground, in their favour. Shortly after the kick off , a good run by Baird and McDougall carried the ball well up the field, where it was kept for some time. Watson in the centre came out of a scrimmage with the ball at his feet, but was charged from behind by Paton, and the Rangers got a free kick. It came to nothing, and when time was called the ball was in the centre of the field. The change of ends gave the Vale of Leven the ground in their favour. For about ten minutes play the Rangers wee compelled to act on the defensive. A fine shot by Baird was well stopped by Watt, but the Vale of Leven still besieged the Rangers goal. Seven minutes after half time one of the Rangers fouled the ball near their own goal. The free kick was taken by McLintock who sent the ball well across the goalmouth, when it was smartly punted through by Paton. The Rangers then assailed their opponent’s goal near which they claimed a foul. Gillespie took the kick and sent it well in, and McLintock punted it out. It was however returned by M McNeil, and the ball through fifteen minutes after half time. After the kick off several times the Vale of Leven forwards got down, but the splendid back play of Vallance and Gillespie frustrated all their efforts. The fine play of the Rangers backs elicited loud applause and a long shot by Gillespie while being returned by McIntyre gave M McNeil a fine change of scoring. Time was shortly afterwards called without any other results taking place. The match reflects the greatest credit on the Rangers who played all through in fine form. Vallance and Gillespie, as backs kicked and tackled in grand style while the forward’s play of Campbell and M McNeil fairly astonished the spectators
