Match Trivia
This match was played on the ground of the former, before a large number of spectators. The ground was in fair condition, but was rather short their being little scope for long runs. The Partick won the toss, and elected to play with the wind in their favour, and their forwards during the first ten minutes looked as if they meant something. A fine run by Struthers ended in McNaughton shying for goal, which the keeper saved and kicked out to Hill who passed to Campbell, and the latter ended one of his fine runs with a shot but Suter who was always on the alert, cleared his citadel in fine style. Kirkham of the Partick, had now a splendid run, and getting pass the Rangers backs shot at goal, which was averted by Watt. Marshall collaring the ball passed on to McNeil who dribbling up passed to Campbell, the latter shot at goal, which Suter punted out, but Hill came up with a grand rush, and sent the ball spinning under the tape. During the remainder of the first half the game was pretty even, although the forwards of the Rangers made frequent combined attacks at the Partick goal they only succeeded in scoring another time from the toe of Campbell. But for the superior goalkeeping by Suter the Partick colours would have been lower several times. Shortly before half time Kirkham had a run, and passed over to McNaughton, the latter shot the ball into Watts hands, who had time kick out. On ends being changed the Rangers with the wind in their favour showed superior play the ball being pretty much in proximity to the Partick goal. Campbell and Hill made repeated shots, but Suter showed himself to be in the right place, and it was only after twenty minutes the Rankine breasted the third goal through. In ten minutes after a fourth goal following taken by Campbell. The Partick now strove hard to get a goal. A shot by McNaughton was saved and from a corner kick Struthers had a narrow shave, the ball rolling past the post. The game thus ended in favour of the Rangers by four goals to none. The want of Vallance and Watson weakened the Rangers team but Kerr and Rankine as substitutes gave a good account of themselves. The Partick team showed much better form on this occasion than they did in their first match with the Rangers this season. Of their forwards Kirkham, McNaughton and Struthers came away brilliantly at times. All their backs played well Campbell being conspicuous. For the Rangers Marshall play as centre forward was much admired. McNeil, Campbell and Marshall passed beautifully to each other. The back lay was also good.
