Match Trivia

This game, which took place at Kinning Park, proved a most attractive fair and was attended by fully 2000 spectators. The ground was in fine condition; the play was of a very superior order all round and reflected much credit on both clubs, who were well represented. At the outset the Rangers pressed their opponents very severely, but by and by the play became of a more even character and some of the fastest runs seen in Glasgow this season were made by the respective forwards – the Rangers eventually proving masters of the match by three goals to two. It is worthy of note that this eight match which the Rangers have won in succession and clearly establishes there right to a place in the Glasgow Charity Cup ties. Shortly after the kick off the Rangers pressed the Pollockshields men pretty hard and gave the backs and goalkeeper a lot of work but J Holm and Irons showed themselves capable of defending a besieged goal and this added to the steady goalkeeping of Gunn, kept the Rangers forwards from getting through with Gossland, Cook and Pringle frequently get dangerously near. By and by however the play got more even, and from a smart run on the part of W Gray and McCallum, one of the dribblers made a shot at the Rangers goal which forced Chalmers to use is hands, and no sooner had the ball goal been cleared than a brilliant run was made by Heggie and Cook and a splendid chance lost scoring by Heggie sending the ball over the bar. Some very even play then occurred and both goals were attacked. After many attempts at the Rangers goal the ball was handled by Cherry at the back post as it was going through, and on appeal to the referee a goal was allowed as there was scarcely any doubt that the ball would have gone through had it not been intercepted. The teams then faced up in the centre of the field, the Rangers made many attacks on the Pollockshields goal making matters hot for them, and from a scrimmage they forced it through. This made the game even but before halftime arrived the Rangers by a smart piece of play on the part of Cook earned a second goal. In the second period the Rangers were while down on the visitors goal and a couple of corner flag kicks had to be warded to them and after several straights shots from the feet of Gossland, Pringle, Mackie and Peacock, but a beauty from Gossland to the right proved too much for the Pollockshields goalkeeper and put the home team in a majority of three to one. The younger team after their next kick off however came away in front and a nice piece of passing by Turner, Sommerville, Glen and W Holm, ended in the leather being shot past the Rangers posts. The kick out in front was followed by a nice run on the part of the Rangers and soon the Pollockshields men were forced to fall back on their goal, which several times had narrow shaves. The visitors however rallied a few minutes before time was called and JB Gray earned a neat goal for them by a smart long shot. Time was called not long after ending a most pleasant game in favour of the Rangers by three goals to two. For the winners the play of McIntyre and McHardy at back was capital and the pick of the forwards was Gossland, Cook and Mackie, while for the Pollockshields J Holm, JB Gray did best at back and W Gray further McCallum and Glen in front. Both goalkeepers too had a lot of work and did it very creditably.
