Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park, in foggy weather, before fully 5000 spectators. The playing pitch was treacherous although the snow had been cleared off the ground just previous to the start of the game. The pace was very fast at the outset, both teams showing surprisingly good form on the treacherous ground. Smith had a good run and centred; Spiers shot but McDonald cleared cleverly. The visitors had several good runs, principally owing to the clever play of Robertson and Donaldson; but Campbell and Henry occasionally assisted by Newbigging prevented any scoring for a time. At last, after Newbigging had cleared from Donaldson, Reid scored. May had several tries for goal, but was wide usually wide of the mark. McDonald repeatedly beat the Rangers, after his backs had been passed and at halftime the visitors led by a single goal. Halftime – Motherwell 1 goal: Rangers 0. The Rangers monopolised almost the whole of the attack in the second half, but McDonald continued to give a brilliant display, and despite good shots by Smith, Kyle and Spiers, the Rangers failed to equalise. Occasionally Motherwell broke away, but Newbigging was practically untested. Near the finish the Rangers seemed on the point of gaining the equaliser, when McDonald once more saved his side, although lying on the ground. The game opened out a little near the end, but even then the Rangers had chances which had they been properly utilised would have won the game. Result – Motherwell 1 goal: Rangers 0.
