The opening match was under the auspices of the new Inter City League. The opened in favour of the Rangers whose rapid movements and splendid understanding evoked much cheering. The Hearts were weak in the front line, and their work was of a spasmodic nature through their rear ranks played a game that for long nullified all the Rangers efforts to score. Rennie in particular being brilliant. The Hearts shortly afterwards scored from a scrimmage, and this was followed with a third goal for the Rangers taken by Wilkie. All through the second half the play was more equal. Wilkie was the hero of the game and scored the Rangers 3 goals. The result was – Rangers 3 goals: Hearts 1 goal.
