Match Trivia
This friendly fixture was played at Anfield before 3000 spectators. The ground was very soft, rendering the going rather heavy. The Rangers started, and straight away, after smart passing on the left wing, Miller scored with a splendid shot. The visitors showed nice combination, but the Liverpool backs defended well, and an incursion on their right enabled Robertson to send in a beautiful shot, which Dickie grandly repelled. Play was of the order customary in friendly matches, and there was any amount of gallery work witnessed, with the usual intangible result at the finish. The bulk of the passing was undoubtedly pleasing to the eye, and both sets of forwards indulged in this mode of warfare to an unlimited extent. Clever work by Kyle, who was showing creditable form at centre forwards, enabled Robertson to again to test Dickie with a fast shot, and after a warm struggle near goal a corner resulted, from which W Goldie smartly headed an equaliser. Even play followed, until the Rangers right wing got through, and Wilkie scored the second goal with a hard drive from close range. Rangers led at the interval by 2 goals to 1, bit on resuming Liverpool quickly made up the leeway, and as the result of much pressure Neil let in Morgan, who ran close in and scored. Another goal was quickly forthcoming from a corner. The ball was nicely placed, and Robertson, regaining possession, banged the ball past Dickie for the third time. Te Rangers did not show to the same advantage in this half as in the initial moiety, and Liverpool did the bulk of the pressing. They attacked in vigorous fashion, and the character of the play improved considerably, the shooting of the home forwards being extremely fine. The Rangers were kept entirely on the defensive, and despite their strenuous efforts, they could make no impression on the home backs, of whom Dunlop in particular was very prominent. The Rangers left wing initiated several smart attacks, but failed to get through, and Liverpool finally won an interesting game by 3 goals to 2
