Match Trivia

For the third time these two clubs met on Hampden Park to settle the first tie in the competition for the handsome cup and decide who should meet the Queen’s Park next Saturday in the final tie. As an indication of the excitement caused by the two previous draws games between the teams, the turnout of spectators was perhaps the largest seen at any of the charity games this season, and we should fancy that the gate-money will increase the Charity cup funds considerably. The weather was very favourable for successful football, but heavy clouds being overhead and as the game proceeded several light showers of rain fell, and thunder peals were heard in the distance. There was a slight alteration on the Dumbarton team from the previous games – Brown (No.1) being unable to play in consequence of an accident, his place on the right wing taken by Wilson, who did fairly well. The game was a great improvement in general play on the part of both elevens compared with at least one of the previous tussles, but there was still that absence of good shooting by the Rangers forwards in front of an opponents goal which has been a great misfortune to the Glasgow club in most of leading matches this season. In the first round they had by far the best of the play, and twice the Dumbarton goal was saved from being lowered as if by a perfect miracle. An idea in fact may be had of close shaves. When it is sealed that the ball hit the goal bar and bounded out into play and once after a corner flag kick it went through the goal, but as it touched no one on the way nothing further than a kick out in front of goal was the consequence. A second time not long afterwards the ball was again sent between the Dumbarton posts from a ‘free kick’ but none of the players touched it. Towards the close of the round, however the strangers warmed up and after some hot work they had the ball in splendid style, and as the second round advanced they wore the Rangers down on their own lines and after passing the ball through ‘offside’ had a lot of cries at the Glasgow clubs goal, which was cleverly defended. The game looked like ending by the scoring of a single goal, but in a scrimmage in midfield a cry of ‘hands’, most of the Rangers stopped play, and Miller and Brown dashed down the field and sent the ball between the posts. Most of the spectators expected to see the ball brought back to midfield and a ‘free kick’ awarded, but as the Rangers kicked off from the centre this was the signal that a goal had been given to their opponents. The Rangers kicked off but there was little of no wind to interfere with the play. The ball was well manoeuvred down the field at the start and McKenzie got close to the Dumbarton lines before he was challenged by Kerr, and the ball cleared away. Back it came again however from the foot of McIntyre and was eventually scrimmaged over the lines. The kick out was well followed up and McKinnon, Brown and Lindsay got possession and took the ball up to the Rangers backs. Here some hard work occurred but the goal was saved and even plays followed.
