Match Trivia

This undecided tie in the Glasgow Association Challenge Cup, which has naturally attracted as much attention in football circles, came off on the ground of the Rangers, Ibrox Park, Govan, and again ended in a draw, without a single point being scored on either side. The weather was very little better than on the previous Saturday, when the teams met at Cowlairs as descending rain continued to fall all the time the contest lasted, and made matters disagreeable to both players and spectators. The attendance of spectators however was a very large fully 4000 assembling round the ropes and on the grand stand. The toss for choice of ends resulted in the strangers having luck with them, and the Rangers had to face a stiff breeze during the first half. The home team accordingly kicked off, and the ball was returned by Sinclair, Fraser and Gow by a nice piece of tackling got on to the leather, and the former dribbled up the backs when McLeod stopped him as the ball was getting well in line with the Cowlairs goal. Some even play then took place near the centre of the ground, and the ball was pretty often forced over the touchlines by the action of the wind. The Cowlairs forwards, led by Reynolds, Carson and Scott, made a very fast run among the Rangers backs, and Scott tried hard to pass McFarlane, but he fell, and the ball was easily cleared away. The Cowlairs men, however, kept well up on the Rangers lines for a little, but the backs and halfbacks of the home team tackled and kicked well, on the Cowlairs men could not force themselves through. The ball was at length put over the goal line by one of the invaders. After the kick out in front of goal, the Rangers by a pretty run made matters hot for the visitors, and getting away with a rush the Cowlairs goal had all the appearances of being taken. Pringle and Brand passed neatly forward to Fraser, and that player made a shot, which Duff had just time to clear away. The ball was soon forced back again and brought close upon the Cowlairs right post. Here McLeod distinguished himself by tackling and clearing the ball away from two of the Rangers team and saved hid goal. The invaders were at length driven back, and for some time after this neither side could gain any advantage. Not long before halftime was called J Gow of the Rangers made the finest run of the day almost from goal to goal. When nearing the Cowlairs lines however a few yards from the goal, he was completely tackled by McLeod, who kicked the ball clear. After this the game was very even till the close of the round. The teams crossed over, and from the kick-off this time taken by the strangers till well on in the round the play was pretty even. By and by the Rangers prevailed and pressed their opponents very hard. Twice McLeod had no alternative but to kick out to save his lines, and then a shot by Brand just grazed the goal bar. The Rangers continued to press and obtained two corner flag kick, which however were cleared away in splendid style by the Cowlairs backs. The last important feature of the contest was a nice run by the whole of the Cowlairs forwards and a close shy by Scott, but no scoring occurred on either side up till the call of time, and the contest again ended in a draw.
