Match Trivia

Early in the forenoon it was considered doubtful whether this match could be played owing to the state of the ground from the frost of the previous day and night, but a heavy shower of snow and sleet fell about two o’clock and made the field safer, although a good deal more slippery than before. At the start the roes round Cathkin Park and the grand stands were crowded with something like 7000 spectators – a large contingent of whom hailed from the northern district of the city. The interest was considerably intensified by the fact that for three times the same clubs had met without being able to overcome one another, and after all the excitement and severe training consequent on Saturday’s game the battle will have to be fought out again, as matters remains in precisely the same position as they did a month ago. The match in fact again ending in a draw – with two goals each, and it has been agreed to play it over on Saturday first at Barrowfield Park, kindly put at the disposal of the Clyde. The crowd at the close of the present contest lingered on the ground for some tine expecting that an extra half hour would be played, but as darkness was coming on and no provision had been previously made in the Glasgow Cup Tie rules for extra play, the umpires and referee had no other alternatives but to order the game to be played over again. The Rangers who had lost the toss, defended the lower goal, and made such good work after their kick-off that a goal very nearly fell to them through Gow in the first five minutes. The field was very slippery, and the back of both sides had several miss kicks early in the game. The Rangers at all points however kept closer together, and a fine bit of dribbling by Brand enabled them to claim a goal. The umpires however, decided that the crack Rangers forward was clearly offside, and the work went for nothing. Not very long after this the Rangers were awarded a corner flag kick, but a good chance was lost by the ball being kicked behind. The Cowlairs men at this stage wakened up a bit and after a fine run by Scott, McInnes and Reynolds, the latter passed the ball to Scott, who made a capital goal. After the next kick-off, the Rangers had the best of the play, and completely beat the Cowlairs in speed, but it was not until three or four minutes from the call of halftime, that they were able to equalise the contest by scoring a pretty goal. The ball was thrown in from the left side by one of the halfbacks, and Brand after dribbling it close in, passed on to Fraser, who made a fast shy and the ball went over Duff’s head and clean through. After a short interval, the teams changed ends, and this time the Cowlairs has the kick-off. The ball had no sooner left the centre than it was smartly returned by McIntyre, and before the Cowlairs forwards had time to cover their goal Gow and Peacock attended by Brand made a fast run up, and Brand goaled the ball. This made the Ibrox team one goal ahead, and for some time after the next kick-off it looked as if the Rangers would have an easy victory. Again and again they attacked the Cowlairs lines and had several corner flag kicks, but they could not get the ball through owing to the splendid defence in front. The Cowlairs at length raised the siege, and after pressing the Rangers with great vigour, and having a corner flag kick they were at length successful in putting on a second point. The ball was well middle by Robertson, and after a short run by Carson; the leather was scrimmaged through by the whole of the forwards. This was two goals all, and although the Rangers had afterwards the best of the game, they played very wildly in front of goal, and lost several rare chances of winning and as no more scoring occurred the match again ended in a draw with two goals all.
