Match Trivia

This event took lace on Barrowfield Park, kindly put at the disposal of the teams by the Clyde Club, in present of about 5000 spectators, and ended in favour of the Rangers by two goals to one. The Rangers lost the toss, and kicked off against the wind. They followed well up and were soon in front of the Cowlairs goal, but the back play was good. In a short time the Cowlairs retaliated; and one of their forwards put the ball through but as it had previously been dribbled over the touchlines, no goal was allowed. The Cowlairs team however kept up the pressure and scored a goal about seven minutes after the start. The Rangers then played up vigorously, but were unable to do any scoring. Cowlairs after some play in midfield had a corner kick, which however resulted in nothing. The Rangers followed with a severe and continued attack on Duff. Hotson distinguished himself with a fine shot from midfield – Duff barley saving. The play was somewhat rough at times, and falls frequent. The wind appeared to trouble the Rangers men, and their kicking was inaccurate. Both teams had two corners, which ended in nothing, and then the Rangers got up, and Fraser passing out to J Gow, the latter passed to Brand, but a good chance was lost. The relief was only momentary, however as J Gow again had the leather, and he passed to Peacock who was lying handy, and put it through. Cowlairs on the ball being kicked off at the centre came on to Nicol in a body the Latter player getting on his knees to save. Once more Nicol saved brilliantly, and then play was transferred to Cowlairs territory. Twice the Rangers had a corner, the leather on each occasion going harmlessly past. The Rangers continued to press, but could not increase their score, and when halftime was called the teams had a goal each to their credit. It was the Cowlairs turn to kick-off, and the Rangers almost scored, Duff saving magnificently, but the ball did not travel more than half field when it was returned, and for a minute excitement ran high – Cowlairs trying to save their fortress, and the Rangers to lower it. The Cowlairs improved and put on high pressure and kept D Gow and McFarlane busy. With the relief Fraser had hard lines, and J Gow was also unlucky when on the spot – McLeod again kicking out to save. McInnes and Reynolds made the next run, and although they put the ball well in, they could not get past the backs. The Cowlairs had the game for a few minutes when relief came. The Rangers however again prevailed, and after a fast run by the forwards J Gow sent the ball into Duff’s hands, and the latter, after stretching through his goal chucked it out. The Rangers as a matter of course claimed the goal, but as the two umpires could not agree the referee’s opinion was asked, and given in favour of a goal. At this the Cowlairs men protested, and after a deal of wrangling among the players left the area, and refused to continue the game. The ball was at length placed in the centre by the referee, and as the Cowlairs team refused to kick it off he awarded the tie to the Rangers. Some feeling was afterwards shown by the Cowlairs partisans at the result, but no disturbance was reported
