The match at Tynecastle between the Hearts and Rangers has given Saturday football in this district its ‘send off’ for another season. It is really time too, for though the warm, genial weather might be quite satisfactory from the spectator’s point of view, it must be far otherwise with the players. As was expected the bulk of the 1000 on-lookers were Hearts enthusiasts. The score of five goals to nil in favour of the Hearts shows that though so far advanced in the season the Tynecastle men still retain their stamina. The absence of several of the regular players may have crippled the Rangers to some extent, but all through the game the Hearts maintained superior play, and won easily. Mackay was never found off his guard, while the backs also displayed ability in their department. The half backs are recognised as a grand lot. Of the forwards, Taylor may be said to stand foremost, but except that Bell had a tendency to aim for somewhere else than goal, the whole front rank worked admirably together. The defence of the visitors’ goal was the feature of the game, for MacKenzie had to depend almost entirely upon himself. The backs were the weak spot of the team, and more was expected of the front division than was given. Wylie especially was looked to for a good display, but he seemed to be completely off colour, and when he did male an attempt to break away, Hill found little difficulty in depriving him of the leather.
