Match Trivia

On Tuesday a friendly game took place at Merchiston Park, Bainsford, in presence of 3000 spectators. The Rangers kicked against the breeze, and after some midfield play Morris had a rattling shot, which went right into Dickie’s Hands. Reid was cheered for another immediately afterwards. Ranger’s left got away, and or what was seemingly an accidental hand by Morris, a penalty was given. Robertson took the penalty, and sent the ball right into Allan’s hands, and the goal was cleared. Hamilton was next noticeable by a smart run, and a clever shot into goal, which Allan saved at the expense of a corner, which proved unfruitful. Back to the Rangers end came the ball, and Morris, who at this time was playing a grand game, had a shot at Dickie, which the custodian had to save by conceding a corner, but it was sent behind. After some midfield play, Dickie had a good number of shots to save, and they were somewhat easily disposed of, but one by Prentice he nearly let drop, and to clear had to concede a corner. Nothing came of it, and Smith sent in a long kick and a rush and a scrimmage ended in McPherson scoring for the Rangers after 25 minutes play. Gillespie next was noticeable when he forced a corner near the flag from Robertson, but it was not improved. Morris had another rare shot, but Dickie was safe. The play was well contested and interesting on the whole. About three minutes before halftime E S had a corner, from which Harper headed a well-taken goal. Halftime – one goal each. East Stirlingshire resumed the second half, and play was well contested for ten minutes, but neither goalkeeper got much to do for sometime. Dickie had to save at close quarters by kicking out, and how he managed to do so over the heads of the players in front was wonderful. About twenty minutes after the start most exciting play was witnessed. Fully half-an-hour had gone when Taylor scored a second goal from a cross by Smith. E S then ran up, and secured an unfruitful corner. Gillespie had a splendid chance of equalising about seven minutes from time, be he sent the ball wide. Smith had a grand shot, which skimmed the bar. Time was shortly thereafter called with the score – Rangers 2 goals: East Stirlingshire 1 goal.
