Match Trivia
Perhaps the most important match, judging by the strength and equality of the teams was that between the Rangers and the Clydesdale on Titwood Park, in presence of a large number of spectators. Clydesdale winning the toss, elected to play with a strong wind in their favour. The Rangers almost at once got the ball, and by means of splendid passing ran it against the gale to the Clydesdale citadel, whence it was soon brought back. The Rangers at the outset played a better game their opponents being somewhat disorganised. Matters were made worse for the Clydesdale when Connell straining his knee had to retire, immediately thereafter the ball was carried with a brilliant rush to the mouth of the Clydesdale goal, and after a smart scrimmage breasted through by Campbell. A few minutes after a similar assault was made, when Gardner missed his kick, and Campbell again sent the ball through. Nothing further had been done on either side when ends were changed. It was thought that in the second half, the Rangers would with the wind at their back and playing against ten men only, have the match completely in hand. But not so the Clydesdale played a splendid defensive game, and even made several in roads into the Rangers territory. The later secured but one other goal obtained in this wise. A corner kick struck the side of one of the posts of the Clydesdale, and rebounded into play, when Campbell quick as thought breasted the leather through. The goal was disputed, but allowed. Some further exciting scrimmage occurred in front of the Clydesdale fortress, but Gardner, Kennedy and Tennant were equal to the occasion, and this match ended with three goals for the Rangers to nothing
