Match Trivia
First Replay. These clubs having paled a drawn game on the 17th of March last, met again on Saturday on the ground of the West of Scotland Cricket Club at Partick. The windows in the house in the terrace around were crammed, and every available spot near the ground was taken up. The game began about half past three. In the first half both eleven’s did their best to score, and some splendid runs were made by Campbell, McNeil, Dunlop and Watson for the Rangers, and Ferguson, Baird and McGregor for the Vale. Playing well to each other up the hill a fine goal was kicked for the Rangers by Dunlop, after the ball had been well placed by Ricketts. The rest of the first half passed over without any more scoring, but shortly after ends were changed the Vale of Leven also secured a goal up the hill, the ball being sent through by Baird, after a determined scrimmage in front caused by a free kick. The excitement was now intense. After an hour and a half of hard play neither club were able to gain any advantage over the other, and it was agreed to play an additional half hour, divided into two quarters. In the last quarter the Rangers had the best of the lay, and a fine shot from the foot of Dunlop was kicked into goal, and punted out by the goalkeeper. The spectators behind began to cheer, and a scene of great excitement followed. The Rangers protested that the ball was through the goal before being touched by the keeper, and the Vale of Leven men declared that it was not. The referees came to the conclusion that it was no goal, but of course it was impossible to get the ground cleared, and the match, as stated above, will again be played on Friday afternoon on the ground of the Queen’s Park Club
