Match Trivia

The close but varied results of the three matches between these clubs last season caused 5,000 people to assemble round the Leamington enclosure Blackburn on Monday. The Rangers came down with a team very different from that they placed in the field last season, Tom Vallance and G Gillespie being amongst the absentees. Still the team was a first rate one and a win for the Rovers by no means certain. Alex Vallance captained in his brother’s place. He kicked off at 3.15 and for a short time the play was kept in midfield. The Rovers goal was the first to be endangered but the backs and halfbacks defended admirably. The Rovers forwards got possession of the leather and a quarter of an hour from the start the goalkeeper was driven to use his hands. Returning the assault, Pringle got well u into the Rovers territory when Suter and Greenwood interposed and both rushed at the players who were able to pass the ball to Inglis and he with a low shot scored the first goal. The Rovers played up harder after this and though Vallance and Young were bad to get pass, made many a good shot into the mouth of the Scotch goal. Brown from midfield passed to Douglas, Douglas to Duckworth, and Duckworth to the centres who with the Scotch backs before them, stood ready in the mouth of the upon it and scored a good goal making the game even. The Rovers maintained the upper hand until half time was called. After the change of ends the Rangers assumed a more aggressive attitude and the Rovers forwards made several good charges upon the Scotch citadel. A goal was claimed after a scrimmage but not allowed the Rovers having a corner kick given them instead. Brown took the ball to the corner and lifted it beautifully on the heads of the other players as they clustered round the visitor’s citadel and the Rovers thus scored a second goal. Brown dropped the leather under the crossbar in such a manner that McDonald just managed to get his fingers to it and divert its course sending it over the bar, the Rovers having another corner kick in consequence. Nothing resulted from this and the Rangers took up the aggressive Pringle scoring a goal just before the call of time from a nice piece of passing play on the part of Inglis. The Scotch forwards passed nicely but could not do much in the face of the home backs and halfbacks. Last season the first match between the two clubs was likewise a draw no goals being scored.
