Match Trivia
These two crack clubs met on the ground of the Rangers at Kinning Park. The attendance of spectators was large not less than 4,000 being inside the enclosure and on the grandstand. The rain of the previous evening had made the ground somewhat slippery and it was a matter of surprise to many to see the players keeping their feet and kicking so well. The Rangers had a slight wind in their favour during the first half and some very even play followed. The home team made their way past the Queen’s Park backs and after some hard tackling and scrimmaging Inglis brought the ball well in and passed it to Corbett. Just as the latter was preparing for a shot at the Queen’s Park fortress he was challenged by Holm but evaded a charge and sent the leather under the Queen’s Park goal. Twenty-five minutes of the game had now passed and although each goal was afterwards endangered, half time arrived without any more scoring. Not long after ends were charged the Queen’s Park forced their way up on the Rangers lines and a corner flag kick was obtained. The ball was paced in front in a fine position and was scrimmaged under the Rangers posts. This made the two teams equal and as the lay was very even it eventually became a matter for speculation as to which side might win. In the first half the play of the Queen’s Park backs was at times scarcely up to the mark and the same remark could be now applied to the Rangers for the senior clubs forwards made bold incursions into their territory and had several corner flag kicks. From one of these Allan placed the ball so close to the left goal post that after bounding off it glanced from T Vallance leg and went clean under the goal. This left the Queen’s Park one goal ahead. After this the Rangers tried hard to equalise matters and lost a good chance by a careless corner flag kick but time was called without any alteration of the score leaving the Queen’s Park masters of a hard fought field by two goals to one. In the last round the ‘fly kicking’ of Watson and Young was very fine and showed great command over the ball. Gillespie had most work to do at goal and did it in his usual brilliant style while among the Rangers forwards Corbett showed a marked improvement on former efforts and Inglis and Pringle dribbled neat and clean. For the Queen’s Park the general tackling of the backs and the smart manner which Watson and A Holm cleared the ball away from goal together with the clever manoeuvring of Ker and Fraser added considerably to the enjoyment of the spectators.
