Match Trivia

In spite of the intensely cold weather a large number of people assembled on the Trent Bridge Ground Nottingham on Saturday afternoon to witness this match, which is certainly one of the most interesting of the local season. During the first part of the afternoon a rough wind prevailed and those were occasional sleety showers, which did not improve the ground already in a slippery state. It was close upon three o’clock when a start was made and the Rangers having won the toss kicked off towards the country goal with a considerable wind in their favour. There was a good deal of smart play on neutral ground and in the earliest stages of the game there were little to choose between the two teams. At length Gunn on behalf of the Foresters affected a run followed by a shot, which struck the posts, but little did not score. The advantage thus secured by the ‘reds’ was only temporary for immediately afterwards the ball found its way into the home territory and the contest was continued with some spirited movements on behalf of the Scotchmen, Young at the back kicking with great force and judgment, whilst the forwards were always active. On at least two occasions the Notts fortress was stoutly assailed, but Sands was equal to his task and the efforts of the blues were successfully foiled. During the first half of the game however the offensive movements were not entirely confirmed to one side. Struggling against a rushing wind the Forrester’s succeeded more than once in getting the ball in close proximity to the Glasgow posts and one or two corner kicks were made by them at close quarters; but these went astray and at half time nothing had been done by either side. With the change of ends the ‘reds’ secured the advantage, which had hitherto been held by their opponents, but they did not seize it immediately and the visitors still had a trifle the best of it. Both fortresses were assailed unsuccessfully, Sands the Notts goalkeeper acting with his accustomed coolness and efficiency. The wind had now dropped so that the ‘reds’ were less favoured than the others had been. Soon after the resumption of hostilities Widdowson the Forest captain made a clean and rapid run a little to the right of the goal but overshot himself and failed to get a kick. The ball was now on Scotch territory and it remained so for some moments during which a hard clean kick from the left wing, passed to Norman resulted in what was recognised by the spectators as a goal. A consultation of umpired and referee took place when it was decided that a foul had just previously been claimed and admitted by the Forest captain and amid some expressions of dissatisfaction, the goal was disallowed. This took place at four o’clock. During the remaining half hour there was some spirited play, frequent spills and one or two rather exciting battles at close quarters. The game was much faster now than it had been previously and occasional pieces of fine play on both sides were recognised by the chilled spectators. Hill, Inglis, McFarlane and Ricketts distinguished themselves for Scotland, while Widdowson Unwin and Gunn did good work for the reds. The last named near the end of play carried the ball through the opposing lines but was deprived of a shot at the finish and there was no result. When time was called neither side had scored and the match was declared a draw. The play of the Scotch team was the theme of most favourable comment on the ground.
