Match Trivia

These teams met on Kinning Park to play off their tie in the draw for the Association Cup. There would be 3,000 present but the cold and gusty weather no doubt prevented many from attending. The Athletic won the toss and kicked off with the wind – a pretty stiff breeze as it proved all through the game – in their favour. In five minutes they had the ball between the Rangers posts and it was evident thus early that the Rangers would have hard work in preventing their opponents from running up a good score in the first half. The Athletic on the other hand knowing the advantage they possessed pressed on to the goal of the Rangers in a persevering way but they lost a lot of chances through not allowing for the force of the wind. Gillespie too was smart in catching the ball when fairly landed for goal and by these means the Alexandra men could only count one goal to their credit when half time was called. Of course all the advantage were now in favour of the Rangers play and as soon as the ball was kicked off in the second half it was seen careering in front of the visitors goal. It was fifteen minutes however before the Rangers could score, Pringle doing the needful. In other ten minutes Pringle had the ball sent to him on the south wing just at the post and he had little difficulty in sending it through for the second time. Hill in a short time kicked a third goal for the Rangers and time was called with the score at Rangers 3 Alexandra Athletic 1. The Athletics played remarkably well their defensive game being cheered over and over again. The Duncan’s at back and Kay at half back deserved special mention while Gossland and Nelson were good as forwards. The Rangers were altogether behind their usual form and seldom showed any of their passing play.
