Match Trivia

It was only to be expected that a very large concourse of spectators would be present at the Final cup tie contests between the Vale of Leven and the Rangers at Hampden Park on Saturday. Indeed it is doubtful if there has been such a gathering at any former football match in Glasgow. Both within and without the ground there was a vast assemblage, and from utmost interest. Play was commenced by the Vale kicking off against a stiffest breeze. The Rangers very quickly returned the ball carried it to within twenty yards of the goal from which it was sent out at the side. Being put into play Dunlop made an attempt to drop and landed the ball behind the posts, while in a few minutes the Rangers had it again skirling the bar. A corner kick ensured and being put well forward the leather was headed into the mouth of the opening and the Vale only saved their goal by the skin of their teeth, the ball just shaving the to bar. When play resumed a hand was called against the Vale, but it proved of advantage to them and they carried the ball to their opponent’s end. Soon however it was returned and while working about well down in the Vale territory another hand was given against the latter, with the result that it was headed over their goal. Obtaining another had advantage, the Rangers pushed onwards, but the Vale checked the movement and their forwards getting on the ball made a capital run, which however was as cleverly stopped by Gillespie. The Vale were able to return the repulse, and for the first time the ball was over the line in proximity to the Rangers goal. The consequent corner kick looked dangerous for a minute, but the ball passed on the wrong side of the post. Gillespie’s kick off was followed up and his compeers in the front carried the ball forward with scarcely a break, Struthers finishing the run by sending the ball nicely through between the posts. The taking of the goal – within ten minutes of the start was accompanied by load cheering. Having been set a rolling again some smart play ensued in the centre of the field, but the Vale managed to work their way forward and dangerously near their goal a hand was obtained against the Rangers. Although judiciously put in the local men succeeded in getting it away and in turn they were at their oponents lines where it was sent behind. For some time the ball was knocked about in the Vale ground and in a brief run the left wing forwards of the Rangers screwed it round and it was carried in. Dunlop ran forward and tossed the ball up, Parlane attempted to strike it out but missed and Struthers rushing in carried it through with his head. The goal however was disallowed on account of the player having been offside which of course was somewhat galling to the Rangers. Matters were reversed for a time and the Vale made repeated assaults at the Rangers goal, which was from corner kicks and hands more than once in extreme danger. The Rangers returned to the attack and although the Vale had some excellent runs they had up to the calling of half time to act very largely on the defensive and save their goal with energy. Hardly had the ball been kicked off for the second portion than a hand was got against the Vale and having been carried into close proximity to their goal was sent behind. The locale of the play however was immediately changed and twice Gillespie had to tackle the ball while from a hand about 20 yards from the Rangers goal the ball was sent spinning through between their post without however having been touched so as to be in play. With energy and eagerness on both sides the game went on a pace and although the goals were frequently in great danger the defending team managed to free themselves. Until the second portion had been far spent the Rangers maintained their strong attack but as if determined not to be ousted the Vale pulled themselves together and went to work with increased vigour. Infrequently attempted to drop the ball at long distances the Rangers just allowing the ball to roll over the line. The Vale however worked the ball well forwards and out of some close play immediately in front of the Rangers goal the ball was kicked across the ground and went between the post. The result was naturally hailed with great cheering. It was now within three or four minutes of time and although both strove furiously to score again neither succeeded and the game ended in a draw one goal each. It can hardly be said that the Vale were in their accustomed form while on the other hand the Rangers acquitted themselves remarkably well and although the play was frequently open the game was on the whole a good one. The result will of course necessitate the clubs meeting again at an early date. Rangers believed they had scored a second goal, and declined to play the replay.
