Match Trivia

These rivals met at Cathkin Park, and played a very hard match in presence of four thousand spectators. The Volunteers winning the toss, the Rangers kicked off and were immediately down on Collie’s goal, Weir saving. Marshall and Thomson broke away, but were checked before getting within shooting distance. The 3rd LRV pressed slightly but Gow and McCartney playing a steady game checked all the onslaughts of the Volunteers. Ultimately in half-an-hour from the start, McKenzie for the Rangers scored what turned out to be the only point of the match. The play continued fast up till halftime. In the second half the Volunteers played a close passing game while the Rangers adopted the long passing style. In this half the Volunteers had if anything the best of it, and for a quarter of an hour Collie had little or nothing to do. Shortly before time the Rangers missed a good chance by Lawrie putting the ball over the bar. The Volunteers now gave Chalmers plenty to do, but they could not get on an equal foot with the ‘light blues’. At the sound of the whistle the game stood – Rangers one goal, 3rd L.R.V. nil. The 3rd Lanark played a splendid game, however luck seemed against them on several occasions the ball going everywhere but under the bar. The Rangers played very well together and several of their runs were cleverly made.
