Match Trivia

The result was close, it should have been wide open, yet it might have been reversed. That puzzles you, but it’s perfectly true, and here’s how. It was an all-blue first half. There seemed to be twice as many Rangers as Warriors on the field. Except for a soft header from Connor, Dawson only handled back passes, which McAffrey was punching, palming and clutching dangerous balls from all angles. The blues spread to the Cathkin supporters. Their pets were never in the hunt. They took heart, however, when half-time arrived with only a two-goal deficit and conditions favourable for the Warriors. Venters had beaten McAffrey in a drive for a Smith cross; Symon had heeled home a hard, low cross from Johnstone after McAffrey had brilliantly turned aside three scoring efforts. Third’s goal had survived countless dangerous raids. Twenty minutes after the interval Woodburn handled in the box. Ten thousand fans and one linesman saw it. The referee didn’t. But he gave a spot kick on the strength of the flag-wager’s report. Third were back with a chance. A goal here, as things were going, would put them right in line for victory. Jones seemed to caress the ball as he placed it on the spot. Calmly he placed it well wide of Dawson – one yard outside the post. They didn’t deserve any further chances, but they got them – and scorned them all except one. Melville contributing his solo worthwhile effort beat Dawson twelve minutes from time. He and Park missed sitters’ minutes later. Third fought like Warriors – like raw recruits, eager, reckless, unorganised, without a real leader. Wing play on both sides was at a discount. Park and Melville were terribly feeble, besides lacking service from their inside forwards. Carabine and Rennie completely liquidated Johnstone and Gillick. The superiority of Rangers half-backs, plus the strength and subtlety of Venters, represented the big difference in the sides. Jones missed a 65th minute penalty
