Match Trivia
Played at Burnbank, the ground was as hard as wood underearth a slight coating of mud, which a shower of rain had made as slippery in some places as ice and falls were painfully frequent. The game resulted eventually resulted in favour of the 3rd L R V by 2 goals to 1. After a succession of loose scrimmages about the centre of the ground, in which the forwards had nearly all the work to themselves. M McNeil broke away up the left side of the field, and by a piece of pretty dribbling passed Davidson, and went right up to the Volunteers goal. The keeper (a substitute) went out to stop the ball, but by a clever effort McNeil centred it up to John Campbell who was fair in front of the goal, and the latter kicked clean through in fourteen minutes after the game began. A few minutes before half time the Volunteers by a combined rush headed by Miller, Scoular, Walker and Crichton, again got the ball in front of the home team’s goal, after a serve scrimmage it was forced through by the overpowering weight of the 3rd L R V Hunter rushing in at the time, and going through with the ball. Several of the Rangers protested against the goal on the ground that their opponents had used their hands instead of their shoulders in forcing them through. Shortly after this a fine steady run was made by M McNeil and P Campbell and the 3rd L R V goal was only saved by the coolness of Hunter, who fell back on the fortress as the pair of dribblers advanced, and watching his opportunity kicked the ball over the tape. A few minutes after half time the Volunteers with the wind in their faces, got the ball up to their opponents’ goal where Davidson by a judicious kick sent it to some of the forwards, but it glanced off Valance’s leg and under the tape amid considerable excitement. The light was now entirely gone, and it was with difficulty either the ball or the players could be made out. It is only necessary to add the game resulted in favour of the Volunteers by two goals to one, and that it was stopped seven minutes before the prescribed time. We have been informed that the Rangers, bedsides affirming that they could not make out the goalkeeper, intend to protest to the Association as to the manner in which their first goal was lost, and also about the spectators invading the ground and interrupting the play. Rangers protested that 1) the 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers goalkeeper was dressed in plain clothes and had no distinguishing uniform on and therefore could not be recognised as a player. 2) That the first goal score by 3rd L.R.V. was taken by Mr Hunter charging and shoving the Rangers with his hands and 3) That the spectators broke in upon the ground and interfered with the players to such an extent that the game had to be stopped seven minutes before time.
The protest was not upheld
