Match Trivia
The football season was opened in Perth last night, when the full League team of the Glasgow Rangers met St Johnstone at the Recreation Grounds, Perth in presence of 500 spectators. The weather was somewhat dull, but fair throughout, and an excellent game of 70 minutes was enjoyed. Waddell of the Saints, started the ball, facing the North goal. The strangers soon collared the sphere, and ran it dangerously into the home teams territory. Although trying hard to get it through, the defence prevailed and the ball for the first time was carried North. The Light Blues, however, again got away, a well combined run ending in McKenzie shooting into goal, which Kerr, in centre had little difficulty in putting through. The Saints retaliated with much force, but while breaking through the defence of the opposing team they failed at direct shooting. Sometime later the Rangers the St Johnstone men feel the burden of their ability. Their back line showed up exceedingly well, keeping the stripes to make the best of it in their own ground. D McPherson on the left was prominent for a smart run up the wing, but Robertson at back returned with a firm kick. St Johnstone as the game wore on improved wonderfully in combination, and seemed to press their opponents more than was expected, considering the strong team they had against them. D Burnfield equalised with a neat shot, and some five minutes later his Club took the lead, the sphere being headed past McIntyre, Who was unable to get at it. Wakened up to a sense of their duties the light blues worked with great energy, but not with much success. A MacFarlane lost a grand chance for the Perth men owing to a bit of carelessness, and shortly afterwards the same players muddled an equally good opportunity. St Johnstone were now coping very successfully with the Glasgow men, and as a matter of fact, engaged in better combined play than the light blues. Half-time St Johnstone 2; Rangers 1. On resuming the stripes obtained a thrown in. Waddell missed the ball, which was instantly sent up the field by McCreadie. A similar point was granted to the Rangers at the North end, but nothing resulted. MacFarlane on the left attempted one for goal, but the ball was fouled. The Rangers came North, where hard lines were experienced in front of goal. Tulloch saved a beauty from McCreadie in the nick of time, and the corner that followed was also unproductive. The strangers were not to be defeated, and again they came away dashingly and equalised. Once more the Saints custodian kept out what appeared an impossible shot, which drew forth the approbation of the crowd. Through the instrumentality of Robertson, Winters and Elliott, the Rangers determined to increase their score, but could make no headway, and retired defeated on every occasion. While managing to keep their goal intact, the Saints made numerous invasions, and on one occasion they almost added a third point, McIntyre fisting out a hard shot from Waddell. The result was a draw 2 goals each. For an opening match the play on both sides was above the average
