Match Trivia

This Match was a replay of the game at Edinburgh, which was stopped a little before time owing to darkness, the Rangers being a goal ahead at the time the game was interrupted. Owing to the strong counter-attraction at Easter Road the St Bernard arranged to change the venue to Ibrox Park. The crowd of 4000 or so who turned up witnessed a game which was on the whole somewhat scraggy, although at times there were flashes of very clever play. The Rangers mixed eleven took some tine to settle into each other’s play, and during this time the Edinburgh team showed up to considerable advantage. McKenzie at left-half , and the wing in front of him being specially noticeable. Bell’s fine turn of speed was frequently brought out by Turner, whose favourite plan was to lash the ball ahead up the wing, and trust to Bell reaching it first. The visitors had several changes in their team from the lot whish said farewell to the Cup at Patrick. Three of their heavy-weights, Kay, Buchanan and Houston were absent, and were replaced by Gray, McKenzie and Brown, the latter being a recruit from Buckhaven United. Lee, on the outside-right, also made a welcome reappearance after a spell at Matlock House, Greenock. After about 25 minutes very even play, Gray the Saint’s centre-half, had to retire as the result of a nasty fall, the ground being very hard, and did not return till after the interval, when the Light Blues led by one point smartly taken by McPherson. The second half was pretty much in favour of the ground team, although it must be stated that Gray, although he turned out, was pretty much of a passenger for the Saints. The League leaders had other three goals cleverly scored by Campbell, Gibson and Wilkie respectively. The St Bernard got one goal, which was the outcome of a somewhat curious decision by the referee. Howden brought off a very daring save, but in raising himself with the ball, which he had riskily stooped to lift with Cameron rushing at him, he upset the St Bernard centre, and a penalty was awarded from which Cameron scored. The result of the game – 4 to 1 for the Rangers – shows what a strong lot the Rangers reserves are. Wilkie was the most serviceable forward on the field with Hyslop, McPherson and Campbell all good. The winning half-backs and forwards were very accurate in sending in drooping shots into the goal mouth, but in the matter of sharp shooting from close range they made a sorry mess of a number of opportunities. The ground of course had a good deal to do with thus, and the St Bernard front line made a bad show in the same respect. Cameron, Turner and Bell were the best of this division, the centre forward being most dashing in his endeavours to break through the Rangers defence, which was very sound. Drummond was cool and resourceful at back, and McKinley confirmed the good opinions forward of him. To have been so long off the field D Mitchell was very sprightly, and it looks as if another game or two would bring him up to his old standard. In the St Bernard back division Wood played a fine game, while McKenzie was the best of the half-backs. Maxwell was not able to made much of Hyslop and Campbell. The Rangers reserve goalkeeper Howden was clean and safe in clearing his charge, and the substantial defeat sustained by the visitors was certainly not due to weakness on the part of Hood.
