Match Trivia

At Logie Green, Edinburgh, in the third round of the Scottish Cup competition. There was attendance of 6000 spectators – record gate for the Saint’s ground – and the weather condition were in every way favourable. Play was commenced by the Rangers, who had an early visit in their own quarter from the Saints, but Barker took play to the other end, where a free kick was awarded. Nothing came of it, however and the next feature was a corner off the foot of Drummond, from which a goal might have ensured but for Haddow’s prompt fisting out. The Saints put on the pressure, and Haddow had a busy time of it. Dobie sent in a couple of hot shots, which were neatly stopped by Drummond. Unfortunately a little disagreement took place when the Saints were well in on Rangers territory. One of the St Bernards made a rush at one of the Rangers, who he apparently thought, has ill-treated one of his companions. The referee gave a foul against the Rangers, and from the free kick Dobie got possession of the ball and scored a goal. The game, which was now very fast, was temporarily stopped by Crossan sustaining injury. The chances of the Rangers were rather brightened by the forwards pressing, but Kerr for the second time, played against his own side, much to the disgust of the West supporters. Every one of the Saints forwards had a turn in an attack, which followed, and Johnstone drew the ball over his head. Laverock finishing the work by scoring a second goal. The halftime score was – St Bernards 2 goals: Rangers 0. On re-starting showed better form and seemed spurred to greater things by the prospect of defeat. They hemmed in the Saints and had two corners kicks, but without result. The Rangers forwards now allowed the backs to have an opportunity. The effect was to keep the Saints better in check, and for a time the latter seldom crossed the neutral line. There was weakness in the forwards division of the visiting eleven, and a capable centre would have worked wonders. Interest was reawakened, after a spell of uninteresting work, by Johnstone getting the ball well away, but Laverock unfortunately fumbled it. Laverock made up for his mistake by immediately recovering the ball and sending it to Scott. The latter passed to Johnstone, who added the third point to the Saints score. Resuming their tactics, the West were soon in front of the Saints posts, where Baillie evidently relied on one of his backs, and the misunderstanding allowed Barker to put on the first goal for the West. The hopes of the Glasgow supporters ran high as their favourites made good progress on the field, and got within shooting distance of Baillie’s charge, but Mitchell after a menacing rush by his companions, sent the leather over the bar. A capital chance occurred to the Saints as Haddow left his charge, and offered an open goal to his opponents, but they were too far out to benefit by the opportunity. Baillie from a free kick, had to save with his fists, and again he had occasion to look scared when the ball hit his posts. The Rangers kept up their attack, and played towards the end a decidedly superiors game to what they had been doing, while the St Bernards showed a distinct falling off. The increased effort of the former were at last rewarded, when towards the finish they scored their second point from a scrimmage. Result – St Bernards 3 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
