Match Trivia
This long delayed tie was played at Dumbarton before a large crowd of spectators. The ground was in good order, and everything was in favour of a fine game except that a stifhish breeze blew from goal to goal. Rangers kicked off, and Dumbarton at once broke away, Bell with a praiseworthy effort shooting past. The home lads were apparently in the best of fettle, and it took the Rangers all their time to keep them in hand. Haddow was kept in hot water for a time, but he was in grand form, and did some extremely clever things. Barker and McPherson relieved matters by a clever run, and were getting close in on goal when a free kick was given against them for questionable tactics. J Bell put in a brilliant run, and had he parted with the ball instead of keeping it to himself something might have come to the effort. A free kick let in the light blues again, but they were driven back, and Ferrier off a timely pass by J Bell, have Haddow a hot shot, which he just tipped round the post. The corner was fruitless, but the home men still hung round the Rangers goal. Hay kicked out, and McPherson and Barker once more changed the scene of hostilities, the formers parting shot striking the bar. Kerr had a likely chance, but he was properly given offside. Throughout the whole of the first half the Rangers were pinned pretty much to their own half, of the field, but their defence was very steady. To Haddow, Hay and Drummond was due the fast that, at halftime no goals had been taken, and the prospects of the Rangers were then very cheering to their supporters. On re-starting the home forwards made an attempt to rush the Rangers goal, but were again baffled. Barker and McPherson paced off, but McLeod cleverly averted disaster by conceding a corner. The ball was well placed, and while McLeod was duly attended to, H McCreadie headed through. Barker immediately after scored a second point, but he was clearly offside. The Rangers took heart after this success, while their opponenets fagged very perceptibly. The brothers Bell were steering a straight course for the Rangers goal, and seemed very likely to equalise, when Hay knocked the feet from John and paid the penalty of a free kick. Nothing was gained off it, but another strong attack by the Dumbarton men was beaten more by luck than good defence, Gillan and D McPherson were in turn winded, and the game had to be stopped on each occasion. J Bell was again in a good position to score, but Hay deliberately tripped him, and had to be cautioned. Drummond treated Taylor in a similar manner, but the home team would have been as well without the free kick. Dumbarton made a final attempt to get on an equal footing with their opponents, but the Rangers men crowded round their goal, and gave no chance of an opening. The result of a poor game, especially in the second half, was a tricky win for the Rangers by one goal to nothing. It is said Dumbarton have protested on account of the full time not being played.
