Match Trivia
The visit of Glasgow Rangers excited a large amount of interest at Dumfries on Saturday, and the drawings at the gate, amounted to £34 10s, were highly gratifying to the Southern Counties Association, who organised the fixture. The Rangers were four players short of their First League eleven, and it was soon clear that their opponents were not to be trifled with. These were a picked eleven from the South of Scotland teams, and a better selection could hardly have been made. At the very start the locals held their own and continued to have a large share of the play. The visitors depended on their deadly rushing and securing goals, and the plan worked admirably in the first half. Speedie bamboozled Strachan with a stinging shot, and a minute later McColl with the greatest of ease, scampered down the field, and just when he was close to the Eastfield goalkeeper, quietly slipped the ball past Strachan into the net. Still the local men had the best of the play and great enthusiasm was evoked when Dysart from a judicious pass by Lavery, netting the ball, Sinclair really having no chance to save. With a one goal lead at the interval, the Rangers felt entirely comfortable, but as time wore on things assumed a different, and, from the visitors point of view, an entirely unlooked for aspect. Lavery added a couple of goals for the Southern Countries, and it was then that the Rangers addressed themselves to business. It was, however, too late for, though the Dumfries goal had some narrow escapes in the last few seconds of the game, the whistle sounded with the local team one goal up. The result is a heartener for to local players, who well deserved their victory. The whole team played well together, their combination being really surprising when it is remembered that the eleven were drawn from widely scattered teams.
