Match Trivia

The first meeting of the season between these clubs took place on the ground of the Rangers, Kinning Park and after an exciting contest ended in favour of the Glasgow team by one goal to none. The afternoon was fine and there was a very good attendance. The ground was somewhat soft owing to the rain of the previous day, but nevertheless some excellent runs were made on both sides, the players being unusually well matched. The home team kicked off and for a few minutes the play was pretty equal. The Vale of Leven however got the first corner flag kick but a good chance was lost by the ball being sent past the goal line. After the kick out the Rangers had a fast run up to the Vale goal at which Hill had a close shot over the bar. After this the strangers attacked the Rangers goal with great determination and in trying to save his side Vallance stopped the progress of the ball with his hand and a ‘free kick’ was allowed a few feet from the Rangers fortress. An exciting scrimmage occurred and the leather was all but under when Gillespie lifted it and cleared his charge in fine style and the goal was saved. A smart run was then started by Inglis and cleverly followed up by Pringle and McFarlane. McIntyre did his best and succeeded in sending the ball into touch, but after the throw in Strathern was obliged to kick out to save the goal. This gave the Rangers a corner flag kick and Inglis headed the ball through. This was considered great luck for the home team at so early a stage of the game, particularly as the Vale of Leven again and again attacked their goal but could not muster combined power enough to send the ball under - Gillespie the backs doing grand tackling. Half time arrived without any more scoring. Not long after ends were changed it became apparent that the Rangers were the freshest team and for a long time kept close in Vale of Leven territory but they too were deficient in that combination which makes goal taking doubly sure and some of the forwards particularly Weir lost several fine chances to goal the ball by injudicious shying and time was called without any further practical work being accomplished the Rangers winning by one goal to none. For the Rangers Vallance and Young were in capital form while among the forwards Hill Inglis and Pringle kept well on the ball and never seemed to be afraid to meet the heaviest of their opponents in a tackling match. As for Gillespie he kept goal brilliantly. For the strangers some of the young ones showed that they were quite equal to the best of their predecessors Frail and C McRae doing hard work in the centre and Kennedy and McFarlane at their respective sides of the field. McIntyre rarely if ever missed his kick and McLeish once or twice did some clever things in tackling.
