Match Trivia
This match was played at Kinning Park in presence of 4,000 spectators and ended in a tie – one goal each. The Vale of Leven loss the toss, and kicked off at 3-15 against a strong breeze. Directly the ball was set in motion the game assumed a fast character capital runs being made by the forwards of each team. No sooner did one goalkeeper free his charge than the other had to perform similar work; and although the Rangers aided by the wind had somewhat the best of it in the first half, the play was very open. Notwithstanding that both sides were frequently within range and free kicks and corner kicks were plentiful, nothing was scored in the first half, the goalkeeping of Parlane and Gillespie being of the finest description. During this period Young of the Glasgow University proved a great acquisition to the Rangers team, his kicking at back and half back being deservedly cheered. Shortly after the change of ends, however he was hurt in a scrimmage but pluckily returned and played to the end. When the teams crossed over the Vale of Leven had the assistance of the wind but their opponents were the first to get dangerous, Parlane being soon called upon. Settling down however they made repeated incursions into the enemy’s ground and gave the opposition backs and goalkeeper a busy time of it. The Rangers however broke away and when 15 minutes had expired a shot by Dunlop after a throw in scored the first goal for them. After another hard attempt by the Rangers had been frustrated the play continued open, the ball being taken from end to end with great rapidity some very fine play being shown all round. Time passed and it looked as if the Rangers would score a win but five minutes before the finish the Vale attacked vigorously, and Ferguson sent the ball through and made matters equal. The game thus resulted in a tie- each side having obtained one goal
