Match Trivia
This event came off at Hampden Park (kindly put at the disposal of the Charity Committee by the senior club), in presence of between 7000 and 800 spectators, and ended in a draw, with three goals each. For nearly the whole of the first round the Vale of Leven had much the better of the play, and scored two goals before their opponents had made a point. This the Dumbartonshire players maintained immediately after starting the second round when they recorded a third. All who saw the contest up till that point considered the game a foregone conclusion for the Vale of Leven, but they afterwards fell off in a most unaccountable manner; and as the Rangers suddenly improved at all points played wonderfully and made up on their opponenets by also scoring three goals. The Vale of Leven won the toss, and McKenzie kicked off and passed the ball to J Gow whose passing it to Aird was nicely caught by Whitelaw. The Rangers, however immediately returned, and were awarded a corner, which had no effect. The Vale got down on Nicol, whose charge was kept in danger for a brief period. McKenzie broke away, but was captured by Forbes who cleared with a magnificent kick. The same player repeated an identical performance and thereafter a siege was sustained round Nicol goal, and but for the custodian, who had a lively five minutes, the Vale must have scored. A corner in favour of the Vale was spoiled by McLaren. The Rangers reached midfield through the assistance of McKenzie, but Forbes completely spoiled their efforts to make progress. Not to be denied, the Rangers front rank combined beautifully and on reaching Wilson that player had to fist out a shot by Allan. The Vale’s left wing now looked dangerous, but Donald Gow saved grandly at the critical moment. Another corner for the Vale was rendered fruitless. The Rangers managed to shake of the Vale prolonged attack, and gave Forbes and Whitelaw a lot of work to do. The Rangers pressure was broken up by McKenzie accidentally touching the ball with his hands. The game now opened up a bit, and both goalkeepers had visits paid them. Allan, J Gow and McKenzie were putting in some pretty work. The defence of both teams was very fine. The Vale again pressed their opponents, and Nicol Certainly had his work cut out for him, which he disposed of in a manner, which reflects great credit upon him. The Rangers had another look-in, but the Vale pushed ahead, and during a brief scrimmage McLaren headed the ball beyond the reach of Nicol. As it to make amends the Rangers on starting gained a corner-kick. The ball however was easily got away, and McLaren was again successful in registering another point for the Vale. With ten minutes to go, the Rangers gathered themselves together, and kept the Vale in their own territory. They were awarded tow corners, and from the second the Light Blues claimed that the ball was over the goal line before Wilson struck out, but the point was refused. A free kick for the Rangers for a foul charge by one of the Vale players caused Wilson some anxiety. The Vale were making tracks for Nicol when the halftime whistle blew, with the score standing - Vale of Leven 2 goals Rangers 0. The second half was entered upon, and it seemed as if the Ibrox Park representatives were going to gain a point, Whitelaw managed to break up their combinations, and the Vale made a spurt up the field, but were checked. Allan, in conjunction with Peacock, carried the leather into the Vale’s district, where it remained for about five minutes during which time the Rangers got three corner flag kicks, that were of no avail. At last the Vale with grand combination on the part of McLachlan and McLaren, they got within shooting distance, and McLaren for the third time scored. Wilson was again called upon, but he turned aside a very likely shot. Cowan, had a flying run up the centre, and passing to Gow and Henry he sent in a beauty for which Nicol was on the lookout and cleared. The Rangers were again getting it pretty hot, but Donald Gow at this time was seen at his beat. His tackling and clearing kicks were very fine. Allan and Peacock were again prominent, and the latter almost scored. The Vale were being pressed somewhat severely, and Wilson saved shot after shot. At this time the Rangers play was of a first class order, while the Vale defence was prefect, Wilson and Forbes in particular calling for special remark. The Vale got the length of midfield, but McIntyre sent then back, and Peacock was successful in heading the ball through. A Fierce scrimmage took place at the Vale goal, several of the players being heaped on the top of each other, among them the custodian. During the scrimmage the ball was sent between the upright. The Vale, nettled at this unexpected reverse, bore down on Nicol, who however was on the alert and punted out a high shot. In less than a minute the Rangers were at the other end, where Peacock ran the ball over touchline. The Vale were again getting it hot, and Forbes was forced to kick out for relief. The throw-in was well followed, and after a kick or two McKenzie equalised with a fine shot. Only five minutes of the game now remained, and the Vale on restarting had matters all their own way, and it looked as if they would pull off the tie. No further scoring however occurred and the game ended a draw, with three goals each
