Match Trivia

This return match at Ibrox Park on Saturday may be put down as having been a rather tame and uninteresting affair. Neither team showed any great form, the outstanding feature of the play being the manner in which the Rangers half-back line comported them selves. Each of the three was more than equal to the task of checkmating the 3rd Lanark’s aggressive tactics, and in feeding and otherwise supporting their own forwards they could hardly have been excelled. All over the Rangers were undoubtedly the superior lot, and fully deserved to win. The points they scored, it is true were somewhat luckily taken, but on the other hand the goal scored by the Third was directly due to a miskick on the part of Crawford. With Miller occulting Hamilton’s usual position the Rangers forwards in the first half did not travel very happily, the inside men – Wilkie and McPherson – being too erratic while Smith was inclined to keep the ball too much to himself. Perhaps the Third were lucky to preserve the defence they did, but all the same Barr, Thomson and Simpson were exceedingly energetic, and never once relaxed their vigilance. Occasionally the Cathkin forwards got within shooting distance, but their final efforts did not appear to be very dangerous. Within a minute or two of half-time Neil drove the ball into goal while standing near midfield, and Raeside though he almost clutched it was unable to keep it from falling into the net. The success was very welcome to the Rangers, and Neil seemed to be very agreeably surprise. With only a goal separating the teams, it was thought that the second half would be better contested. Evidently the Rangers were dissatisfied with the arrangement of the forwards, for Miller and McPherson changed places. But the change did not prove very effective, although immediately on restarting the Rangers brought the ball right through the Third’s defence, and McPherson bear Raeside with a fast cross shot. Smith then with Miller as his partner continued to play an individual game, to have the worst of the exchanges with Barr and Simpson. Cross and Gibbons made brave attempts to beat Dickie, and the latter managed to get right off one or two ugly shots. Near the finish Gibbons put on the Third’s only point. Both Raeside and Dickie did well, although the former appeared to be less confident than he usually is. Barr and Thomson as a pair were steadier, and more reliable than McKinlay and Crawford, but individually Crawford was the cleverest back on the field. Gibson, Neil and Robertson fairly out shone the Third’s half-backs trio, and it was here than the Rangers had a big advantage. There was not much effective combination among the forwards of either side
