Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park, Govan before 5000 spectators, the weather was first class. The Rangers loss the toss, and started the play against the wind and with a strong sun in their faces. The game at once became exciting. Aided by the wind the Third soon put on the pressure. Their team seemed to get along well with each other, while the Rangers could not comb at all. Several times each goal was in danger, but it was after 20 minutes play when Crossan put on the first goal for the Thirds. The Rangers retaliated, but they could not break down the defence of the Volunteers. Keeping at it the Third obtained a second goal, this time from a fine shot by McVean. Five minutes later McFarlane cleverly added a third goal. Meantime the Rangers seldom got past midfield. Halftime result – Third Lanark 3 goals: Rangers nil. After a short interval the game was resumed with vigour. The Rangers aided by the elements, looked as if they would soon alter the complexion of the game. Although they pressed severly they could make no impression on the study defence of the Third. Nearly half-an-hour had gone when McKenzie caught a return of Downie’s, and shot the first goal for the Rangers. This success put the ‘light blues’ on their mettle. From a corner kick they rushed through a second goal. From this to the close both teams strove their utmost to improve their position, but no further scoring was done. The display of the losers was very poor, not one of their divisions playing up to expectations, while the play of the Third was smart and finished. Their team is if anything, light forward, but this is fully compensated for by their tactics. Final result – Third Lanark 3 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
