Match Trivia

League match played at Ibrox Park before 5000 spectators. The Third having lost the toss kicked off towards the west goal. The Rangers had the advantage of a strong breeze in their favour. Third were first to press, but Steel put the ball behind. From the goal kick the Rangers got well up the field, Low put in a clever run, and passed across, where A Smith popped the ball into the net, but an appeal for offside was sustained. Keeping up the pressure, Rangers had a free kick just outside the twelve-yard line, but Gibson shot the ball behind. This was followed by a corner for the Rangers, bit it also was fruitless. Coming away in a body, the Third transferred operations to the other end, Beveridge and McCreadie being prominent. Beveridge passed to the left, where Steel got round Smith, and passed back to Beveridge. The latter payer tried a shot, but the ball went far over the bar. Play was slow at this stage, a heavy fall of sleet regarding the players movements. A grand shot by McPherson nearly had the desired effect, but the goal was missed by inches. Rangers were having the best of it, and Bowman and Caldwell had to look active to avert disaster. A long shot by Oswald went over the bar. From a free kick, which was beautifully placed by Drummond, Oswald scored the first goal for the Rangers. Low was playing splendidly, and after beating Caldwell he slipped the ball to McPherson, who scored a second goal for the Rangers. The Third were eager to score, and Peddie was successful with a long low shot, which Dickie could not reach. Halftime result – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark 1 goal. After the interval the Rangers were quickly to the front, and in tackling Hyslop, Bowman gave away a corner. Nothing came of it however. Again the Rangers forwards were on the move, and Hyslop gave Milne a hot one, which he stopped, but ere he could recover himself McPherson was on the ball and breasted it into the net. Three goals for the Rangers. Just after this Rangers got a corner, but it came to nothing. A magnificent save by Milne raised the enthusiasm of the crowd. He caught a fast one from Hyslop just on the line, and although the Rangers claimed a goal the referee decided otherwise. Play was very one sided, the Third’s seldom getting as far even as midfield. Several corners fell to the Rangers, from one of which Low scored their fourth goal. It was now al, up with the Third. A breakaway by Steel and Peddie transferred operations to the opposite end, where Drummond gave away a corner, McCreadie cleared and again the Rangers took up the running. From a pass by McCreadie, Low got a long shot in, which slipped into the net off Milne, thus registering the fifth goal to the Rangers. From this to the close the Rangers pressed continually. Low scored a sixth goal for them. No further scoring took place. Result – Rangers 6 goals: Third Lanark 1 goal.
