Match Trivia
The final tie for the Charity Cup was played on Hampden Park in excellent weather, and before an attendance of close upon 10,000 persons. The gate money amounted to £495 and stand £66. The Rangers kicked off against a slight wind, and Peddie right off missed a chance by shooting over the bar. Despite determined oppositions the Rangers gradually got down, and a fine shot from the right went sailing into goal, McFarlane however clearing with plenty of time. A splendid spurt between A Smith and Simpson was the next feature of interest. The Ranger outpaced the Third’s halfback, and centred but nothing came of it. The Third were aggressive in their movements, and Smith and Drummond were kept busy defending their charge. The Rangers forwards put in an active bit of work, and getting well in front, Hyslop steadied and shot for goal. McFarlane saved, but Low came rushing in, and amidst applause scored the first goal for the Rangers after some ten minutes play. Some clever work by the Third’s right wing transferred play to the other end, where Beveridge sent in a fine ball, but the centre was too strong, and Peddie could not reach it. A Smith far out scored a second goal for the Rangers. The shot came somewhat unexpectedly, but all the same McFarlane made a poor shape at saving. Hannah put in some fine touches in midfield, his passing being superb, but unfortunately he was not to well supported, as he should have been. The Third improved considerably, but all over the Rangers had decidedly the best of it, Hyslop putting in one or two good shots, which McFarlane cleared. The Third’s forwards worked extremely hard to gain a point, and kept the Rangers defence continuously on the move, but they could find no opening. McPherson scored a third goal when nobody expected him to do so, and although the Third had worked for all they were worth, they could make no impression, and at this stage it seemed as if the Rangers would add another to their list of trophies, and make the year the most memorable one in their history. At halftime the Rangers led by 3 goals to nil. Immediately after the restart, Gibson scored a fourth goal for the Rangers, Miller obscuring McFarlane ‘s view. All interest was practically out of the game, in which there was some nice play notwithstanding. But the Rangers invariably held the mastery, and despite all the efforts of the Third – sometimes attended by wretched luck – they were unable to beat down the defence. McPherson who had been playing wonderfully well, scored a fifth goal close in, Peddie at length opened the scoring for the Third with a shot that struck the far post, and went through – a very good goal. Hyslop with a swift shot, scored the sixth for the Rangers, and at the other end the Third had desperately hard lines. The result of a rather poor final was – Rangers 6 goals: Third Lanark 1 goal.
