Match Trivia
The closing match in the Glasgow League competition took place at Ibrox Park last night, the contestants being the 3rd Lanark and the Rangers. In view of the fact that the clubs have to face each other on Saturday in the final for the Charity tie, the teams selected to play last night were composed almost wholly of reserve players. The Rangers did not play a single member of the team that defeated Celtic on Tuesday, and only Barr of the players who over came the Queen’s Park on Saturday appeared in the ranks of the 3rd Lanark. The fair sprinkling of spectators present saw a game that was devoid of any special feature of excellence, the play for the most part being a very haphazard and ding-dong sore of style. For a long time neither side could gain the advantage, so far as goals were concerned, although the Rangers did the biggest share of the aggressive work. The back play of Barr and Briggs was clever and clean, and repeatedly thwarted several well-intended efforts by the Rangers front line. Close on half-time the 3rd forwards got well up to McAllan, and Banks succeeded in landing the ball in the net. The interval arrived with the 3rd leading by one goal to nil. Immediately on the restart, the Rangers equalised from a scrimmage, and shortly afterwards McKenzie was beaten for a second time. The 3rd made several hard tries for the Rangers goal, but the defence and particularly Crawford proved too much for them. A third goal for the Rangers was notched by Turnbull, and shortly before the finish a fourth goal was secured. Taken all over the Rangers were the better lot, but their play was scarcely value for such a large margin of goals. The best players on the Rangers side were Crawford, McLean, Jackson, Crawford and McNicol, and the 3rd Barr, Briggs and Banks were the pick. Mr Tom Robertson was referee.
