Match Trivia

This undecided tie in the Glasgow Charity Cup took place last evening at Hampden Park, and again proved a great and exciting affair, an extra half hour having been arranged after thee usual hour and a half before a result was brought about and Renton eventually won by two goals to one. In the first half Renton won the toss and played with the wind which was blowing up the field. The Rangers kicked off, and made a splendid defence, but by and by the Dumbartonshire men pressed the Glasgow team very hard, and out of an exciting scrimmage scored a smart goal. The ball was then brought to the centre, and after some hard play on both sides the Rangers came away in fine style – Peacock, Fraser and Lawrie dribbling very fine. When the ball had come well up on the Renton side Hannah, in trying to save his goal, kicked behind. The corner flag kick was taken by Fraser and Peacock headed the leather through thus equalising the came. Not long after this the Renton made a hard attack on the Rangers lines, and a fine shy by McNee came so close that many spectators thought a goal had been scored. As it hadn’t the Dumbartonshire men kept up the pressure, and it took the Rangers backs all their time to keep the goal intack. The Rangers, however raised the siege and Pringle had a run all to himself. In making his shy at goal, he was tackled by Kelso who however sent the ball over his own lines. The corner flag kick was taken by Lawrie and missed. After some long kicking on both sides the Rangers were again pressed, and Chalmers had to throw the ball away for safety, but when the half time whistle sounded then had not only cleared their lines, but were heading towards Renton territory. In the second half the Rangers had the wind in their favour, but the Renton men were better on the ball, and worked it up to the Glasgow sides goal, where Gow and McCartney acted with considerable precision, and by heading and clever tackling at length cleared the ball away. In turn however the Rangers improved a bit in combined play, and for the next five minutes made it hot for their opponents by peppering away at their goal – a fast shot by Muir from half way passing the posts by a few inches. The Renton after this wakened up with great vigour, and made a brilliant shot on the Rangers goal, and twice in a few minutes Chalmers had to shy the ball clear. The goal at the bottom end was then besieged, and the Rangers had a corner flag kick, but nothing came of it, and before their backs could get back to their goal Barbour and Campbell laid siege, and the lather hit the bar. Coming back in the scrimmage the ball again hit the bar, and was eventually cleared away. The Rangers had afterwards a turn at the Renton goal, and was well in front when time was called. As both elevens had scored one goal, an extra half-hour was played. In the first quarter of an hour the Rangers made several brilliant attacks on their opponents goal, but failed to score. In the second however, the Renton men took the game on hand and afterwards played much better together than the Glasgow men, and at length set the match at rest by McNee scoring a fine goal, and caused his side to be victors by two goals to one. About 3000 spectators were present, and the match although somewhat rough, war remarkable in splendid back play, particularly on the part of the Rangers. In connection with the final tie on Saturday between Vale of Leven and Renton, the Waterbury Watch Company have intimated to the Charity Committee that they will be very glad to present each player in the winning team with a watch.
