Match Trivia

The first match between these clubs this season took place on Kinning Park in presence of about 5000 spectators. The ground was heavy owing to the rain that fell during the week and fast play was rendered somewhat difficult. Those who expected to see a closely contested tie meet with a great disappointment as the Rangers were over matched from the outset and had to submit to a defeat of five goals to two. Nearly all the scoring was done during the first half. About ten minutes after the kick off Christie scored for the Queen’s Park and during most of the time they had the best of the play. Occasional runs were however made by the Rangers forwards who several times placed the Queen’s Park goal in jeopardy. The senior eleven were not to be denied the whole of the forwards playing a magnificent passing game and from a corner kick at the Rangers goal five minutes later Christie smartly returned the ball and Anderson lying handy neatly headed it through. The Queen’ scored another twice in quick succession the third point being taken by Christie and the fourth by Harrower. This piece of remarkable scoring was accomplished within the half-hour and while playing against the wind. The ‘light blues’ now played better together and the forwards visited their opponent’s goal more frequently. In the attack Hamilton, Inglis and McGregor were conspicuous. The ball was not allowed to remain any length of time in one place, a good shy at the Queen’s goal being prevented going through at the expense of a corner kick, while Gillespie shortly after caught a shot from Smith. The next feature in the game was the spirited play in front of the Queen’s goal but though the Rangers had a corner kick the opposing backs cleverly cleared the goal. Hamilton shortly after scoring the first point for the Rangers and this achievement he repeated in the course of two minutes. This success seemed to put new life into the Rangers and till halftime they had their own with the Queen’s Park. With the wind in their favour during the second half the Queen’s Park pressed their opponents very hard but they were only able to add another goal to their score, the point being taken by Smith towards the close of the game. The Queen’s Park never played to better advantage, Holm and Arnott kicked with accuracy and they were well supported by Gow and Elliot at halfback. The forwards seldom missed a chance and pressed nicely together. Individually to they showed splendid form, Harrower making capital runs in the centre and Fraser and Anderson on the one side and Christie and Allan on the other put in a good work. The Rangers played finely at times but were evidently overmatched. Gillespie received an injury, which necessitated his absence from between the posts for a few minutes towards the close of the game
