Match Trivia

The return match between these clubs was played at Kinning Park. Spectators were even more numerous than on the occasion of the first meeting on Hampden Park, when the younger club suffered defeat. The present match from kick off to finish was splendidly contested. It did certainly look at the outset as if the senior club were about to repeat their victory for Ker scored a neat goal by one of his fast shots, two or three minutes after the ball was sent off and beside the ‘Queen’s men’ were pressing their young opponents rather hard. The Rangers however seemed to improve after getting fairly started. Making determined effort to equalise matters, the forwards showed great speed and a brilliant run started on the right side by Struthers finished with a goal. This made one goal each. After the kick-off from midfield the Queen’s Park had the ball past the Rangers back and is front of goal in a few seconds but Gillespie was ever attentive to his duties and although the seniors had two corner-flag kicks, the steady play of their opponents in front goal prevented scoring. Another dashing run by the Rangers forwards not long before half time was called earned a second goal for the young club, the ball being just cleared of the left post by Angus. In the second round the play was very even each goal being again and again assailed, and some brilliant football shown but no additional score was made till about five minutes from the call of time. The Rangers were still a goal ahead of their opponents, and it was thought by the thousands of excited spectators that they would at least be able to hold their own, and win the match. Crowding round the Queen’s Park goal the Rangers had the ball several times over the line, but good goalkeeping saved the seniors. At length the play was transferred to the Rangers end of the field and after having the ball several times all but under that clubs goal. Fraser started a pretty run for the Queen’s Park, and ended with a hard shot for goal. Gillespie got down to save his charge and the ball having slipped out of his hands. Anderson bonded in front and sent it through the goal amidst the wild excitement. Thus finished one of the finest matches ever played between the Queen’s Park and the Rangers – two goals each. On behalf of the Queen’s Park the backs did not play with nearly so much precision as in many previous matches, preferring to tackle a dribbler too far away from goal, but the forwards were unceasingly active and clever. H McNeil never showed more successfully in any game, Ker and Smith played cleverly to each other in the centre and Anderson and Fraser showed good dribbling and passing powers. By far the best man on the Rangers side was Drinnan who showed brilliant power and rarely if ever passed the ball. Stewart at extreme back too made a very meet comparison for A Vallance (in room of the Rangers captain) playing up most pluckily. Struthers showed a market improvement in keeping hold of the ball and dribbling fast and Steel, Angus and Inglis astonished all who saw the game by their quick action and neat dribbling
