Match Trivia

This event attracted fully 4000 spectators to the new ground of the Rangers Ibrox Park, where a very pleasant game was played, despite a couple of heavy showers and strong wind, ending in favour of the Queen’s Park by four goals to two. The Rangers were considerably strengthened in their back division by Forbes of the Vale of Leven), and also in the forward contingent with Sellars and Brand. The senior club with the exception of Cherrie and Harvie, put the same team into the field that have proved so successful so far as the season has gone, and the manner in which one and all acted together was worthy of success. The Queen’s Park played with the wind in their favour during the first round, but the Rangers invaded their opponents ground almost as soon as they kicked off the ball, and Sellars got on to it and passed on to Brand, but the latter was collared by Smellie and the lather sent back to the centre of the ground. Some ever play ensured, but the Queen’s Park aided by the wind forced themselves down on the Rangers backs, and despite the brilliant defence of Forbes, who sent the ball clear twice, Berry passed the leather to J Hamilton who scored a neat goal. After facing up again the Rangers made a smart kick-off, which was followed by a fast run on the part of Peacock and Fraser, but the ball on being kicked cannoned against McIntyre and the Rangers lost a good chance. After this the Queen’s Park forwards headed by A Hamilton on the right came down on the Rangers lines and the ball was twice scrimmaged over the goal line. A corner flag kick afterwards fell to them, but the goalkeeping of Chalmers saved by a sharp punt out of hand. The Rangers backs after this had very exciting work with the opposing forwards, and had to line out in front of their goal. Hobson kicking well, but proved too slow in tackling, and this gave Forbes additional labour in assisting. After some long kicking by the opposing backs in a strong wind, the Rangers goal was again taken by J Hamilton, who kicked the ball trough by a hard shot about 20 yards away. On restarting the Rangers made a close run up on the Queen’s Park lines, and Sellar, White and Fraser came so near that Sellar was in the act of making a shot when he was collared by Arnott and the ball sent away. In a little however, the Queen’s Park again prevailed, and from a corner flag kick by Lambie the ball was passed through the Rangers goal for the third time, after touching the knee of Chalmers. No sooner had the game been again started than the ball was brought down on the Rangers goal by A Hamilton, and a shot by him hit the bar, and after the ball had been touched by the goalkeeper it was followed up and charged through by Allan. Halftime was called not long afterwards with the ball right in front of the Queen’s Park posts, where it had been brought by the united effort of Sellar, White and Brand. With the score standing at four goals to none in favour of the Queen’s Park, the game was renewed after a short interval by the Queen’s Park kicking off against the wind, but the ball was soon returned, and the Rangers laid siege to the Queen’s Park goal, and the backs had to use their best judgment to prevent the ball from going through goal. A shot from Sellar came pretty near, and at length the Rangers had a corner flag kick, but Gillespie saved. Then a run was made by Berry and Allan well up on the Rangers lines, and the ball was sent behind. After the kick out the home team forced their way down the field, and a nice pass by Forbes, who followed his man for the purpose, enabled Sellar, Peacock and White to run away in a cluster, and after a hot scrimmage Fraser goaled the ball by a hard shy. The match now stood at four goals to one in favour of the premier club, but in a few minutes after the next kick off the Rangers were pressing their opponenets so hard that another point for them was momentarily expected. The Queen’s Park defence however was really excellent, and Arnott and Smellie did the bulk of it, while Cherrie, Hill and McAra contrived to keep the Rangers forwards at bay. The ball was several times so close the Gillespie had to fist and even throw out. A well-directed shot, however cleverly charged in by Brand was successful in scoring a second goal for the Rangers. No more scoring occurred and the match ended in favour of the premier club by four goals to two. In consequence of the high wind there was very little dribbling, and close passing and the backs had the hardest work of all
